Hey tube guys can you identify this preamp tube as a 5751 1958 RCA preamp tube??I know it is a 5751 but the year and stuff. The seller wants 40 bucks for it just making sure its authentic vintage???
It's doubtfull. Look at the one on the left in this pic and compare. [ Long Black Plate next to a short grey plate ]It looks like a shortplate to me.
If it isn't black, it isn't.
From that picture you cannot tell the year. It is an RCA but I dont think its RCA manufacture.
This is exactly why I dont buy NOS tubes off Ebay. 99.99% of the sellers on there either dont know jack about tubes or dont want to tell the truth. All the way from the 50's through the 80's there was TON of rebranding that went on. You can find RCA labelled tubes from at least 6 different manufactures that I can think of off the top of my head. You HAVE TO know whats in the bottle not just whats on the box or whats printed on the side.
Many times what you are looking for are small clues like the spacing on the feet on the mica (one of the problems i see with this tube) or is the getter halo standing straight up or tilted? The pattern to the ribs on the plates. With the tube in hand some of these things can be hard to spot, with a badly glared out photo it makes most of them impossible.
If there are more and better pics might be able to date it. If it was me I would just message the seller and ask for confirmation of the date code. If he says "well its a 58 cause those were the years the black plates were made" I would pass. If he says "sure the date code is XX" then I would feel ok about the date. But I still wouldnt feel ok if it was actually a rebranded GE or Sylvania as was common. If you dont think that matters look up for how much less those tubes sell for.
If you really want a REAL NOS RCA 5751 I got a dealer who has some who is very reputable and just a hell of a guy. They are brand new in box 75 bucks. Yes you are paying a bit more because its a dealer but you are also assured that someone who knows the game has checked them out and they are good. Let me know if you want me to hook you up with him.
RCA's codes are a PITA. I have a list stashed somewhere cause its impossible to remember. There is a letter for the year but they dont follow chronologically Its stupid like 66 is Z 67 is U and 68 is T.
But this ONLY applied to RCA MADE tubes... not RCA Brand tubes! RCA brand tubes have a dot on the label the brand tubes have a 2 letter code that goes like
Jan 66 is AX Feb is AY March is AZ April is BA So on and so forth.
It gets sticky... its easier to just keep a cheat sheet than trying to remember all the date codes.
I declined his offer and told him to post more pics of it before I bid again.Another question how do the RCA blackplate 1960's I believe, 12at7's sound like??Do they have a good tone
He also was a no return guy so I'll wait not enough evidence for me to spend 40 he wanted 50 but I offered 30 and he countered 40.
Buy from a reputable dealer who will take some time to speak with you/answer questions, instead of "winging it" on ebay looking for a good deal and hoping for the best.

Well no I have gotten a dozen or so on there and they all work great and were exactly what I wanted and what they advertised.I alos dont wing it I do go in lookin for the best positive feedbacks and people that have been on for awhile.I also look for money back and stuff like that. But this was the only one I was kinda questioning.
