is this a bad idea?

i had an idea to be able to run a big amp, and 4x12 cabinet, but at reduced volume.

so what happens if you wired 2 of the 4 speakers backwards? in theory would it not cancel out the 2 other speakers? and thus be quieter? actually i can see this wont work already,

but has anyone ever tried some kind of noise cancellation like this?

I am not sure if this will work or not but you can always use power attenuator with tube saturation is what you are going for.

Yes. IMO, that is a bad idea.

Connecting two of the four loudspeakers in your cabinet in reverse will create an out-of-phase situation. This will create comb filtering of the signal. It will also set selected resonances into opposition against themselves, reducing some and doubling others. This could harm the structure of the cabinet.

So, in short, it will sound crap and it might damage the cab.

Either follow cakire's suggestion of attenuating a high power amplifier or get a lower powered amp and run that flat out.

You answered your own question= they will cancel each other out, and you will end up with a very midrangy, tinny sound. Yes, it will be much quieter! but will sound like poo

This conjures up images of Egon telling Ray and Peter not to cross the streams in Ghostbusters.

Just wear noise-canceling headphones. :fing2:
