Is this a good pickup selection?

I'm considering these pickups (all SD of course :) ) :

Alnico II pro (neck)
Hot Stack for Strat (middle)
Duncan Distortion (bridge)

I was considering the Invader, but it's just a bit too distorted and muddy. I also thought the Jazz didn't have as nice as sound as the Alnico (from the samples on the SD site).

I'm not entirely sure on the hot stack, it sounds good but you can never be sure from a few second sample.

Do these pups work together well? I'll be playing sort of various metal/hard rock/classic rock/pop styles.

I don't have many well stocked guitar shops near me to test them out, so I've decided it would be best to get your views on it.

Are the any other good pups that you would recommend? (around the $70 mark).

Thanks, Robert.

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

The Quarter Pounder is a good middle position single coil. Loads of balls for more classic rock kind of sound. Might give you more variations in tone than the stack would.

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

That set up would work well for lots of different tones, with the right wiring and the proper amp. Personally, I'd go with a Classic stack in the mid, but that's purely from personal preference. I like my notch positions to be extra quacky. ;)

the distortion is a great pup, no reason why you should use another bridge if you have a humbucker spot there. it is very versitile IMO although others may say otherwise.

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

If you think the invader is too distorted, I don't know why you'd want a distortion.

I'd go with a custom or custom 5 and change your middle pickup choice to a vintage rails.

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

middle position...surfer or vintage rails or classic stack. bridge...if the invaders too hot, then distortion will be too hot for you as well, i think. depending on what do you want for a bridge humbucker tone i'd go with different options...

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

maybe you need a jb or a patb-1 or 2

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

I didn't mean to say that Invader is too distorted, it's just that it's very muddy and doesn't retain as much of the tone as the Distortion.

Re: Is this a good pickup selection?

i think the distortion is a great pup - and versatile. just by sheer picking force you can get very different voices. it will easily cover CCR - to "Ride the Lighting" Metallica - to Slipknot (witht the right amp of course)
also, i think it retains clarity very well. i cannot make it muddy. it will get buzzy before muddy id say...
