Is this dangerous?

Okay, I have a problem. When I run my classic 30 on the dirty channel with the post at 12 and the pre at 4 (the amount of gain I want) Its not as loud as I need it. Obviously the amp runs a lot louder when the pre and post are both on 11, so it can go much louder. Just not under these settings. Would it be dangerous If i used a preamp pedal i have to boost the volume so I can get it to run as loud as it would if the pre was on max?

I'm no expert, but I would think that the only time it might get dangerous was if the speaker's handling capacity was only as much as the amps output (ie. a 30watt speaker with a 30watt amp) and you had the amp totally dimed then put a boost pedal on top of that.

But if you're just using the pedal to get the gain amount you want without cranking the amp then I'd say that's perfectly fine.

...remember though...I ain't an expert :smack:

Re: Is this dangerous?

Boosting your input with the preamp is going to do something similar to turn up the amp's pre- gain control. Either method will give you the same thing - a higher drive level into the middle and output stages of the amp. You're going to end up with a higher-gain sound, which you apparently don't want. This will not make the amp (much) louder, just dirtier.

So, using the preamp is not "dangerous" - the amp won't put out more power than it's capable of, just from driving the input harder. But you won't get the desired result of "louder", either.

If the amp isn't loud enough with the MV on 12, then you're running out of clean headroom. The solution is a bigger amp, or to play quieter. I would suggest the later. The Classsic 30 should be plenty loud for most purposes, but "loud and clean" is not its strongest suit.

Why are you running the Post volume flat out?...... lower the post a bit and crank the pre to get the right amount of dirt... The way you are running the amp is holding it back... You are using the pre controll for a volume controll... Nothing wrong with it i guess but it's not the best way to use that amp....

Re: Is this dangerous?

Normally I don't run it on these settings, but I don't want anymore gain. Also the pedal I have, which my grandfather made me, doesn't increase the gain like the pre control does. It triples the perceived volume though on its max setting. I thought it was a preamp pedal, but I'm not entirely certain. He said something like it turned the signal to 4 times its normal unit (explained it in units), before it hit the amp.
