Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

just amazing.

It really amazes me how amazing this thing is, and why it doesn't get a bunch of rave is insane.

I really see no better deal for it's price range ($400 Used). The only other thing I'd wanna get would be a rocker 30 and even then I'd be sacrificing reverb, and effects loop even though really I've been preferring my delays without the loop. For $800 more.

About my only gripe with the amp is that the footswitch feels really cheap, but they have aftermarket ones on ebay for not too much.

I got a 2x12 Combo right now and soon want to upgrade to a stack with an Orange 4x12. I run it through a Boss Tu-2, Boss Ph-2, and a T.C Nova Delay.

The El84's are american sounding but have more clarity than 6L6's to my ears. And I have the gain cranked most of the time just playing hard rock. I've put a Bluesdriver in front of it and it took to metal like a champ. Maybe not my first choice for a metal amp but it can do it well.

Anyone else love this amp?

I had one, and I liked it quite a bit. I've also seen Off Broadway a few times over the last several yrs, and their lead player uses one, w/Hamer gtrs. He sounds fantastic.

I sold it a few yrs back to finance another gear purchase, but I would purchase another if it had a decent price.

The price range for the Classic 50 is an excellent deal, at least in the States. Prices are somewhat higher here, but it's that way for most gear in Australia.

There are some killer amps out there for low bucks.

The Peavey Classic 50 is one.

The Sovtek Mig 50 is another, The Mig 50 is kind of a Fender tweed Bassman in a head and with a solid state rectifier instead of a 5AR4 rectifier tube.

No lust factor - that's the problem. Nobody's lusting for the name Sovtek or Peavey - but they're great amps none the less.

I had the 4x10 version and that thing was a great amp. I got rid of it when I got my Mesa Boogie back when i had a Rectoverb, but that peavey was an outstanding amp.

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

I've got a 4x10 and a 2x12. Very versatile amps, for not much coin at all!

Peavey just doesn't get much respect from players. The audience never seems to have any issues with them though. ;)

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

my way too large rig for 10 years has been a Classic 50 head and a 5150 head... i a/b between the 2 heads into the same cab... sweat amp....

that rig is insanely large so i picked up a C30 combo and use a few pedals with it for a compact rig that does everything my large rig does!!!

every now and then i see older C50 4x10 combos go dirt cheap... $350 Canadian... oneday i should grab one at that price.. It always seems when one turns up i'm real thin on bread...

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

I had one from the mid-90s when the 50's still had EL84's in them. Chops has it now, he bought it from me whern needed some money. COOL amp. Some seriously groovy tones in there.

I've always liked the Peavey Classics. Great sounding amps, probably one of the best value amps out there!

you mean the new C50's are not EL-84 amp's?

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

Oh wow, they ARE!! Just looked on the Peavey website... I coulda SWORN they were packin' 6L6's.

Yup. PV has used them in the Classic series for years...all models. The 100 watt Classic head uses 8 EL84s.

i have not seen a 100 watt Classic head in a long time... i've only seen one at the old Canadian Peavey Warehouse once in the mid 90's...

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

I have two major problems with the classic 50. I owned one for many years. Though the cleans are awesome and really are worth the price of admission alone, the dirt channel lacks bass. They cut all the bass out of the dirt channel and that really takes the balls and force out of the amp. Neutered dirt channels never make me happy. Couple this with the fact that the amp just doesn't seem to take pedals well. I don't know why, but it didn't like any pedal I plugged into it no matter what the pedal's pedigree was. No amount of twiddling or dialing will make a pedal sound good through that amp.

hmm that's too bad it didn't work for ya... i'm completely the other way.. i use these things with pedals like crazy... they get used more then any of my other amps with a few common pedals in front... OD's and Distortion's.. A lot of distortion pedals i find i like better thru the Peavey's then the Fender's...

but ya the Classic series is thin on low end...

i have found my C50 and my C30 are perfect amps for my tele..

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

I love my C30!!! Clean channel with the Metal Muff ... oooh, that thing is schaweet!!!

i have bought a few Danoelectro Fab Tone pedals used for less then $40 over the last 5 years and they turn my C30's clean channel into a metal machine for sure... lots of low end chunk and dirt with that pedal!... if you can find one give it a try! it works great with the Classic series amps...

Re: Isn't the Peavey Classic 50...

Thing is, I swore off every peavey until I played the classic 30. That thing had incredible cleans, and a very usable gain channel, though I don't use it much. It has the wattage I was looking for and the tubes I was looking for too. The tweed head looks kinda funny sitting on my red (w/ black grille) avatar cab, but I kinda like the look lol.

Well Said!!
I think Peavey makes a lot of mediocre amplifiers, but the C30 and C50 are not in that category. Truth is, you have to spend quite a bit of money to get past the tone of these amps. Kind of like the Fender HRDx. Pick up one of these amps used and in good condition; they are just a good deal. Tubes and a speaker upgrade help, but that is not much of a stretch when you consider the price you pay for a good used Peavey C30-C50. What more can be said.

it's kind of crazy that you can pick these things up for $300-$500... an all tube 2 channel amp for that coin is just silly! great buys
