IsoCab clip

I am testing stuff in the studio before tracking guitars.. I have a Randall IsoCab that I'm using with (in this case) an Orange Dark terror. Previously I had tried an SM57 and found the sound to be stuffy sounding.. so I decided to try an Audix i5 which takes out some of the mids (the offending frequencies?).. and did a clip using my Carvin V220C with Seymour Duncan Invader in the bridge...

Thoughts? It's just some random riffage.. no drop tunings (I don't use them usually).. besides being a bit "soft" in level.. how's the eq/sound of the clip?

Here's the clip:

Re: IsoCab clip

That right up close-to the speaker super treble detail is hard to hear unless you get your ears right in front of the speaker.

He can either choose to dial it out or add more mids and bass to balance the frequency spectrum.

Personally, I'd swap the ceramic Vintage 30 for an alnico Celestion Gold and the zingy treble detail will be much less noticeable.

Since it's an iso cab, the right speaker is even more important since there's no pleasing room acoustics that can enhance the signal... I'd spring for the best.

I thought the signal sounded good to my ears but then again, I like a decent amount of treble and upper mids.

Yeah, there is a top end fizz, and you can hear the box that it's in. I've been planning on building an ISO box myself, and hopefully I can combat the boxyness o the box with some good damping in the mic area.

The best mic I found for that cab is a Sennheiser e906 or Sennheiser 609. The hyper cardoid pattern helps reduce the cab rumble that gets into the mic. I would also recommend using as little volume as possible. The louder it gets, the more rumble that gets into the mic. I would also line the cab top and bottom with 2" Auralex foam to help control the sound bouncing around in there a little better. Its not a panacea but it helps some

You can get decent sounds out of that cab but you have to forget the traditional rules of micing cabs when you are dealing with small enclosed iso cabs like this and just follow your ears.

The e609 is a great match for this cab (I have one, too). I have found you can eliminate the cab's woofiness by adding Auralex foam to the bottom chamber; this did wonders for my cab!

I like using ribbon mics, and using the Auralex really helped get the mud out.
