IT HAS ARRIVED!

I thought it might be cool to give a insight to others today, I recently bought a fairly rare neck pickup that to my understanding is quite sought after, the DiMarzio Music Man Axis pickup AKA the EVH pickup, well I got it after trying to find a neck pickup that suited my needs, and I got it by sheer luck because of my guitar teacher just so happening to own a Axis guitar and me liking the neck pickup tone, he didn't sell me his but I did find one of the same pickups on ebay and won it.

So here is how I would rate the pickup in my guitar tonally, It has a very warm tone even on clean, its very fat sounding yet surprisingly clear, and on my overdrive setting I can get a really warm growl for chords and notes alike, on distortion I can get sustain for the ages and a solo tone that can only be described as epic, it reacts to my finger movements incredibly well and quite noticably reacts to soft and hard touches on the strings, I can do metal solos all the way to Classic Rock solos with it and it never holds back on power or feels dead or out of place.

Overall a truly magnificent pickup and the best thing I ever invested in.

Oh and my guitar for those who are wondering has a rosewood fretboard, full mahogany body and neck and has a wraparound stoptail bridge.

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED!

yeah the custom wound dimarzio axis pu's are BOTH the best dimarzio i ever tried. every time i play my axis i smile and cant put it down but is it the guitar or both the guitar and the tone from the pu's? The top looks great in person but in the pic looks bad. I have been trying to set another set for my one charvel to see if they sound as good in another guitar?

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED!

well the neck sounds quite nice in my guitar its really warm but thats also probably something to do with the full mahogany factor of the guitar, but another thing I noticed is that it is really hot, I recently read that the neck reads out like 12k or something like that.

EDIT: oh and my guitar is a PRS SE so I think the pickups might be doing at least half the job ;)

my axis neck pu is 15.1K and it has the air design

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED!

and 15k really? finally a pickup thats on a level with my bridge pickup :P

yeah but resistance doesn't always determine the output of a pu. there are many factors to make a pu's output. the axis neck pu is slightly hotter than the air norton and pretty similar in tone, the axis is deeper toned than the air norton and a bit more bite to it. the tone zone and air norton were two designs that were part of 6 sets that VH had to choose from. the TZ/AN set was the second choice, once he went with the ones that are now in the axis, dimarzio decided to sell the set that was his next choice in line and named them what they are today the tone zone and the air norton, dont ask me what norton means? LOL!

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED!

Sounds like a awg43 pickup. Nothing too special. I doubt that VH had any real impact on the pickup design.

Personally I distaste EBMM's and Dimarzio's scheme to only sell certain pickups with certain guitars. At least they didn't put trademarks and patents on it.

ETA: if they want to sell me one of these things they better start offering a 1-11/16" nut, and then do not put the strings into that wider nut so narrow that you are back where you started...

as much as i love the axis guitar i also think that ebmm is being real s**theaded about the whole not allowing dimarzio to sell just those pu's. it is all EBMM's fault, because trust me if they were not being held back legally from selling them dimarzio would have put these on the market many years ago, they get thousands of Email's about these pu's. they are in the total know it mode that these wound make them a lot of money! that is why the TZ and AN sold so many units, simply because dimarzio states they they are the closest you can get to the axis pu set

you are right, he just choose what steve blucher
brought to the studio for him to test. he was not actually there involved with the guys winding these. it was more of a VH said he wants this tone for the bridge and the neck type of thing. they are still killer dimarzio's to me the best have ever made and believe me it has nothing to do with VH being involved. the bridge is really cool it is a PAF type tone but very hot in output with highs that are tele like when you really dig into the strings and the neck pu is very touch sensitive to how you play it. it can be very warm and round or play harder and it has more snap and great harmonics for a neck pu

I totally agree especially on the VH not being involved I'm not a VH tone chaser I just dig the pups, they sound great mixed with my sound its just the way I like it.
