It was twenty years ago today...

Well, actually, I have no idea what day it was. But the sun was out and I was taking pics of my guitars when i realized I bought my strat in 1993. So we've been together 20 years now. Came close to selling her twice, once for financial need, once because a guy offered me a stupid amount of money for her. Fortunately, I never did. It's a 60s reissue MIA. Bought it for 999 CDN new (The Canadian dollar sucked back then, so US guitars were stupidly expensive.) It's all stock, with a 5 way switch (it came with a 3 way if someone wanted to return it to vintage speck.) Anyway, here she is:

Those are nice. Does yours still smell strongly of nitro-cellulose?

Yes, especially if I leave it in the casse for a day or two. It's only recently started to "check" in the proper way, It will be a while before it looks like Wahwah's Old Dear.

That's a beautiful color and a nice instrument! My first guitar was purchased in '96 so I understand the whole sentimentality bit.

The cool thing is that once you learn a thing or two about how to make some minor changes or improvements (even simple stuff like replacing a crappy pot), you can end up with a better playing instrument than it was only a few years after it was new. I have a lot of lower end guitars that I liked, but they just sat around deteriorating - it's cool that they play and stay in tune better than they ever did before, without compromising the aesthetics and feel of the original instrument.

Thanks for posting!

COOL strat. $1k canadian doesn't sound that bad for new... or has the canadian dollar really inflated since then, with $1k canadian today being nowhere near as much money as back in the day??

hey, enlighten the ignorant -what does nitro smell like? I've got a couple vintage-ish old axes that DO emit a strange smell (chemical not like rot or mold or anything, lol) from being left in a hardcase for too long, but I never even considered whether they might have a different finish... other than the smell, how can you tell (before it starts discolouring)?

Re: It was twenty years ago today...

Back in 93, I think you could get a new strat in the States for around 700 USD (The Canadian dollar was around 80 cents then). Free trade was still phasing in so there were still import duties on Fender and Gibson.

It's hard to describe the smell of nitro. Kind of like describing tone ("Furry on the edges, with lots of mids and some bass grunt")

It's a great smell, though...almost a touch of vanilla?????

Re: It was twenty years ago today...

I bought my first Strat in '87. It's been heavily modified(replaced the neck with a Brazilian rosewood board, locking tuners, graphite nut & saddle & a set of Antiquity Texas Hots). I think it is a great guitar now, but the neck is a bit "chunky". When I bought this guitar I was sure I wanted Maple FB, then I bought an EC Strat which I really preferred so I replaced this neck. The neck is just a little big and its been reshaped a few times. It plays well.

Thanks, it's not going anywhere. Dying to see what it will look like in another 20 years.
