It's all in the EQ

Why is everybody always bitchin' about "this pickup doesn't have enough upper mids....this one has too much treble" it makes me sick instead of spending lots of money buying all sorts of brands and "sounds", what about making a better use of the eq?.....if you have a pickup that is fairly good (better than an ibz powersound) all you gotta do is buy a parametric eq rack unit and you're all set. You can shape the sound like you want before it even reaches the amp. Of course you will need a more or less good pickup since the eq wont do miracles....but it gets pretty close. I reckon that for 200$ you can get a paramt eq and save a lot of $$....just my opinion.

it costs less to buy pickups, you could buy at least 4 pickups for the price of a rack eq :D

well my problem was UNSOLVABLE with just a EQ which i use. i wanted more tightness and if a pup has a loose bass a EQ aint gonna tighten it up much
as far as more treble or more bass yes a EQ solves that but there are certain things a EQ cant make up for like if the pup does not have enough clarity or output or if it has too much output, S**T like that needs a certain model pup

Because simpler is almost always better. I want to hear my guitar and amp...not a piece of studio equipment screwing with my tone. Lew

Re: It's all in the EQ

because i dont feal like hauling an eq around with me whenever i am goiong to plug into an amp. i would rather have a guitar that sounds good all the time than a guitar that only sounds good with an eq.

Re: It's all in the EQ

yeah, these guys are making good points. If you really feel the need for an EQ, then get one, but it's definitely better if you just find the right tone in your guitar so you don't have any crazy pieces of gear. The only way you should need an EQ is if there's one thing that can't be remedied by a new pup.

Re: It's all in the EQ

In some cases you're right, but you can't dial in what's simply not coming out of the guitar's output jack, and you can only cut certain frequencies so much. If you just need to tweak, an EQ is fine. But there's no way you can turn a Custom 5 into a Custom Custom just by boosting the mids as much as you can and cutting out the highs and lows. It's not quite as simple as that.

PUp eq and rack eq are not the same. The pup has certain qualities like responsivness and complenting the wood of your guitar that an eq cannot do.

Re: It's all in the EQ

Nice thought... but... think about it... could you take the sound of one persons voice through a michrophone, apply an EQ to it and make it sound like another persons voice... NO...
That's like saying a single coil and a humbucker with similar EQ are going to sound alike... it's just not the case...

You actually can make a coil sound like a humbucker with an EQ, it's been done. By beefing up certains things and making a pup hotter, it can sound like a HB. It's similar to the SD pup booster.

Re: It's all in the EQ

and what if you want a high output pickup. applying gain doesnt change the pickup to a high output one.

Re: It's all in the EQ

An EQ is maybe not the answer, a lot of people use Amp modler's.Yeh,Yeh tubes are best, but only if you drive them! If your not giging most the time you can not turn up an amp to those sort of volumes and I think that maybe one could get more useable tones that way rather than the EQ road. If youc compere a great amp to a Line 6 we all Know which will win, but for a large number of usable tones these type of amp's come into there own. I mean 30 odd different classic amps....., and tone is what we all go for :offtopic: Only a bit

I had a Furman Guitar Pre-Amp/Parametric EQ that I used to use to do just that. I'd sort of scoop the mids and at the same time create a resonant peak that made my Strat sound a little like a Les Paul through a Wah Wah set to its sweet spot. Sort of a Boston or Brian May type sound...violin like. I think a Boss DS-1 does that type of trick well...that's what I use these days to pump up my Tele if I need to. Lew
