Hi everyone, everybody is telling me james hetfield used duncans, but they say he switched them after m.o.p, others say he just used them on kill em all. Does anybody know exactally when he switched over to the emg's, and what album can we hear the duncan crunch...
thanks

Re: James hetfield & duncans

I've been able to nail the MOP tone with a JB through an old Marshall Valvestate VS100. I played a jackson RR1 through that amp once, which was JB loaded, and it nailed it. I just put a JB in my Ibanez. It comes VERY close, but not as much as the Jackson. Kill Em All can be done too. Ride the Lightning- I never liked that tone, it always seemed muffled. I haven't tried an Invader, but I hear that's what Hetfield used.

The Metallica EMG tone you hear on AJFA and the Black album is a result of studio work and layering of the guitars. I saw Metallica live, and have their live albums- their EMG/ Mesa Dual Rectifier tone is very thin, unlike their albums. The closest I can copy the AJFA and Black album tone is with a Boss Metal Zone.

In my opinion and Duncan pickups through a Marshall will get you closer to a Metallica tone than EMG's and a Mesa amp.

Re: James hetfield & duncans

He started using EMG's durring the Ride the Lightning tour because they had a tighter low end. MOP was done with his while Explorer w/EMGs and his white Flying V w/Invader.

The thinness of his live sound has nothing to do with using a Recto, it has everything to do with not having multiple layers of guitars. The same is true for any amp....

I've seen/heard tons of people play live and achieve a thick tone with one or two guitars.

The last couple times I saw 'tallica outside ('98 or so), I agree the tone was thin. Their tones were also noticeably cleaner. I always thought they sounded thin because they just turned the gain down, and didn't bother adjusting the EQ.
