Was bummin' around last night and decided I would prefer more to play over drinking and hitting on women (no, seriously).
i went to Zhang's and he put in a set of Pearly Gates. Still trying to figure these out. They are incredible and frustrating at the same time. Perhaps, because I am learning how to use them.
They are all the tightness and old school tone, with sparkle for shredding I wanted out of the APH1s. On the other hand that "presence" in the highs, that kind of sizzle kind of gets to me. I feel like my ears get sore after a while, in a way that highs kinda do without ear plugs at a loud rehearsal. maybe it's a good thing??? I'd like to hear them against a band.
Still, they kill. SD's just give you that classic open tone that studios love. That sauce that sells the song, and you can just post prod them any way you want.
Regarding Zhang, that guy can play! Although I find his cats the most debilitating thing on earth (if you don't have an allergy, imagine being sick all the time), I like hanging out with a guy that breathes guitar. He can wail everything from Jazz to Aerosmith.
I love giving him a plug. I buy SD's regularly, but I was glad to buy a set of Zhang's "SLUGBUCKERS". I am probably going to get a set in my other guitar. He does all custom work, really puts his research in and has many satisfied clients.
He hooked me up with A8's which just weren't my thing, but were thick and juice and not as over the top as a C8. He also did a 10k A3 PAF that was one of the best pups I have ever played in my life. The most unqiue tone off the shelf that I have ever heard. Open, beefy and articulate and sweet all in one. They had a sweet high end that just melted the studio. I used them on a work for hire project, and am thrilled with the tracks. I also used an APH1 LP on some of the tracks, in tandem. I feel they worked together well.
If you haven't considered Zhang's pups, please do. Price is great and they are nice addition along with my Duncans.
