Jammin' in Phrygian mode

Here's a quick little off-the-cuff solo over a backing track provided by one of the members from the HC forum. The first half of the solo was with a Duncan Distortion in the neck position. The second half was with a Duncan '59 neck. I thought both sounded pretty good. :)

I think the backing track is awesome. It's got a sort of trance/kashmir vibe going on. If you want it you can get it here: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1324909

Very cool. I have been playing around with Phrygian mode lately. I'm nowhere near that standard though.

I think you sounded a bit like Dave Murray at times there, especially considering you were using the neck pickup.

Cool stuff! I think you need to work on your vibrato a bit and make it wider + more controlled in places but that's the only real criticism I have. Otherwise some pretty cool licks

Thanks for the backing BTW, had a quick jam over it and here's the result -

I used a Peavey Predator 7 string with a DMZ bridge (not a clue which one, got the guitar S/H) and Guitar Port :)

Sick runs!! Great clip again, Nuntius!

Re: Jammin' in Phrygian mode

Alright, i snagged the file...I'll give it a shot on Wednesday night or Thursday day when I have a bit more time. It will give me a chance to try my Mesa/Boogie DC-2's direct silent recording out :) Something I"ve been meaning to do for a while now....we'll see! :)

and on your takes. Now it's no big secret (well maybe folks here don't know as well) that metal is not my thing. I'm a roots kinda guy (blues, folk, country, etc) but I do love the head-bangin stuff from time to time and lately I've found myself diggin it a little more than usual (but diggin acoustic more than usual too..odd timing). My insights into the takes:

Myxolidian: Man, you got chops! There's no denying the fact that you can freakin play your a** off. In your jam though it seemed like there was no buildup, you were balls to the wall from the get go, which can work too! Something I picked up from jazz (and am still not very good at yet, working on it) is that you need to tell a story with your solo, no matter the length. It should have a beginning, a buildup, a climax, and sometimes a decline right at the end. (sometimes it just ends on the climax). That's my only criticism. You played amazingly and I'm envious of your control on the faster runs. Just make it a bit more cohesive? I think that's what I'm saying :)

Nuntius: You kinda did what I'm telling mixolydian to do. you started out slowly, let the track go where it's going before you added your stamp on it. I wasn't a big fan of the chugging rhythm part in the beginning but that's just me! :) I like that, while you obviously can throw down the shred, you didn't do it for a lot of this take. Made my blues/jazz lovin heart happy. I felt though like you could have thrown the shred down a little more, believe it or not...not a *lot* more, but just a hair more? :) No real critique here. wasn't a huge fan of the "chord" tone you were getting, but it's a guitar port...meh :)

Both of you guys are freakin great player and have control of the shred technique that I only dream of having (even though I don't wanna play shred, I'd love to have that kind of control). I'm workin on it :) I'll get a take in soon and you guys can get your chance to take your shots at me later this week :)
