Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

Hi guys,

About a week ago I installed a Jazz/JB combo (I found it used at a good price) on my guitar and was amazed at the sound. Clean it sounded full and great for anything (really) and distorted it was powerful and I loved the note separation and clarity that I would get. I don't use and pedals, only rely on the overdrive of my amp which I keep mid-low for a natural crunchy tone and to be a able to clean up by rolling off the volume.

I found the Jazz/Custom5 combo at a good price (also used) and installed it to give it a try, this set has chrome covers, whereas the other had open coils. I wired it the same way, to get neck-both-bridge and two separate switches to split the neck to the screw and the bridge to the slug.

I plugged it in and clean sound good (not great), the jazz is very bassy (in a good way) and the custom5 sounds louder (but not unbalanced). Compared to the JB, it doesn't sound as good split, too little output in single coil mode, and I liked the "twangy" tele-like sound that the slug coil of the JB gave.

Then I switched to the dirty channel and that is were the disappointment began. Both pickups are very muddy, no note separation when chording or riffing. When soloing it's ok, but not as good at the other set. I tried reducing the gain but it didn't help much.

What do you think? Could this be because they have covers? On both sets I adjusted the pickup height so they be as high as possible and so they'd sound even. I'm really bummed out from this and I don't know what to do. I compared it with my Les Paul that has BurstBucker Pros and there is a big difference. I'm not a big fan of covered pickups and I don't know if removing them would improve the sound.

Cheers,
Walter

The first thing that you could try would be to lower the pickup height, then raise the screw pole pieces. I've found that pickups that are too close to the strings often don't sound good under gain.
If that doesn't clear things up enough, you could try removing the covers.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try and post what I find out.

Yeah, I have a set in my RGA121 and they sound great. But mine don't have covers. I have "heard" that having covers is kinda like having 300K pots vs 500K pots. Probably total BS but who knows? Hear a lot of stuff on the internet. I would be greatly interested to hear how it went if you decide to remove your covers.

It really depends on the covers. Some of the cheap Asian import covers can cut a lot of high end, but stock SD covers cut very little. The two Jazz pickups in particular shouldn't sound all that different, so I'm wondering if something is damaged or if maybe the Jazz / C5 set is fake?

similar guitars? good quality electronics? the covers will soften the high end a little but shouldnt make them muddy

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

Bad strings? More than once I've tried to cheap out on strings and they showed up DOA.

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

These are not muddy sounding pickups at all...in fact, they are quite scooped. I would make sure they are wired correctly first, or try wiring them directly to the jack and see what kind of sound they have.

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

I would check all of your connections and maybe even retouch all of your solder joints. So often sound issues can be traced back to bad wiring or soldering.... ask me how I know, LOL.

I'm not implying that you have no wiring skills, but bad connections can happen to anyone occasionally.

+1

A fried tone pot can also cause the problem he's describing. Been there, done that.

As someone once told me regarding cars: Start with the cheapest repair first; as in, if it could be a fuse, or it could be the starter, replace the fuse first. The same thing goes for musical equipment. As does, first check your connections.

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

Thanks a lot for the advise guys! Here’s some extra info:

It is the same guitar
The same strings
The same electronics
I only changed the pickups

There is no tone pot, only vol and swtiches.

I will try what you said in the following order and one at a time:

-Lower pickups and raise screws poles
-Check and re-solder joints
-By-pass electronics and wire directly to the jack
-Remove covers
-Install new strings

I hope I solve the problem soon. I doubt the pickups are fake, the have the SD logo on the bottom plate and the sticker with the model (SH-2n & TB-14). How else can I check if they are legit?

Thanks again!

Well, at least you can figure that once you work it out, it should sound good.

If the pickups aren't fake, those could be low quality after market covers. If none of those other steps work, try removing the covers.

As they say "curiosity killed the cat".

You said you were really happy with the JB/Jazz set, so you should've "let sleeping dogs lie"

Ok no more cliches....:laugh2:

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

That is true, I should've let the hot rodded set in and enjoy it. Anyway, I'll try to improve this set and if nothing works, then I'll probably sell it.

I adjusted the pole pieces, meaning that I lowered the pickups and raised the screws. They have now a bit more clarity but not as good as the other set, still some mud in there. I compared it with my PAC604w and the PAC sounds louder and clearer, better in my opinion (besides the single coil hum...) and when the bridge pickups are wired in series for humbucker mode. it is definitely louder and with more gain that the custom.

I'll do two things now:

1.- Install a hot humbucker (that I already have) on the pacifica and put the two single coils on the neck, this way I make it HH and see if I like the sound and dynamics.

2. Re-check all solder joints of the Jazz/Custom5 set and see if it improves. If no change, then wire directly without controls or pots and if that does not change, then remove the covers.

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

Check those covers, too- if they aren't original, they might be poor quality ones.

Re: Jazz/Custom5 combo is a muddy mess! This can't be right!?!

Ok, so while I'm at it I should just go ahead and remove them

If you don't want the covers, definitely remove them since it's pretty easy to do. You can always put them back if you change your mind.
