Jazz has WAY too much low end?

I put a Jazz in the neck of my Jackson. Its an alder bodied Dinky with maple/rosewood. EMG 85 in the bridge.

It has this massively overpowering low end, in Drop D it just kills everything else. I have taken it down on the bass side to the point where anything on the E A or D strings lose any definition, and its STILL too much mushy bass.

My wiring is:

EMG85 to 25K volume -> switch-> out
Jazz to 512K volume -> switch-> out

volume levels balance nicely, the middle position on the 3 way even works pretty well. The Jazz by itself is like someone cranked everything from 250Hz down to +12 dB.

What am I doing wrong here?

Your pot values are too low --- they are effectively acting as a low-pass filter.

You want 500k ohm to 1000k ohm potentiometers in a rig like that.

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

I have a feeling it's got something to do with that active EMG, but don't quote me on it...

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

Thats the only thing I can think of - that the 25K pot on the EMG is somehow messing with the Jazz... but as per EMG, I NEED a 25K pot for the 85. And I put the volumes pre-switch to avoid interaction between the two.

Maybe Ill just dump this EMG and put a JB or Custom in the bridge... always liked the Custom in alder... and no more batteries would surely be nice :O

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

Where, in your circuit, is the buffer?

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

in theory actives and passives should never be mixed, but i have seen people who have done it with good results so i don't know if thats the problrm. have you got a tone pot with the jazz? the jazz n is usually quite bright

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

it's definitely the pots. actives are super low impedance, so they run very low value pots to keep the highs attenuated. the jazz is usually run with either 250k pots(as it's actually a pretty bright pickup) or 500k pots. running it through the 25k pot(s) is chopping off all of it's definition.

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

The pots are pre-switch so the 25k is out of the circuit when only the Jazz is selected. The Jazz has its own 500k pot.

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

Check your solder joints. You're highs might be grounding out. Solder everything again and give it a shot.

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

crap, didn't read that. listen to ach91332 then, that sounds more like what it might be. :dunce:

Re: Jazz has WAY too much low end?

I think he's referring to the bass response, which is indeed very sensitive, not a muffled tone.
