Jazz neck and 59/ custom hybrid bridge question, Split 59 is low in volume?

HI

My luthier installed a Jazz in the neck and a 59/custom hybrid in the bridge of my hollowbody..The jazz splits really well and i can hear the single coil. The 59/hybrid seems lower in volume when spilt? I asked him about that and he didnt know either, its like a subtle difference, i thought it would be more being a hotter pickup..It seems the jazz when split is louder, is it wired wrong or any ideas? thanks

It's correct.

59/C hybrid uses the 59 neck coil and a custom coil. If qhen spliting you are using the 59 coil the you are usung a similar output coil (compared to the jazz in the neck) bit in the bridge (less amplitude of the string so less volume).

If you want a bit more use the cuatom coil when splitting.

Cheers!

The slug coil is the normal split one for Duncans and wiring diagrams, which is the custom coil. If you have asked for hum cancelling in the middle while split this might explain it. Otherwise it would require the whole pickup/guitar to be wired in an odd way for the 59 to be the coil it splits to.

Re: Jazz neck and 59/ custom hybrid bridge question, Split 59 is low in volume?

I installed a 59/custom hybrid in my Epi Les Paul, with Jimmy Page wiring, following the instructions taken from the SD webpage and when splitting the 59/custom hybrid, the working coil is the 59 coil. If I want to get the Custom coil, I need to push the pot for the "phase inversion". There is a noticeable difference between the two. Just splitting is the weaker of the two, spllitting + inverting the phase, which gives me the other coil, gives me a much stronger signal. So it is pretty clear that just splitting is giving me the 59 coil instead of the Custom coil.
I would bet that the same is happening with the OP, he is getting the 59 coil instead of the custom coil.

Aww ok thanks for the replies. So im splitting the 59 coli, not the custom coil....so it can be wired to split the custom coil huh? sorry dumb question but which one on the pickup is the custom coil? the one with the Duncan logo on it? thanks

Well, to be sure, split the p'up and tap both coils with a screwdriver, to clearly see which one is the one.

In the '59/Custom Hybrid, the standard functioning coil in the case of split, is the SLUG coil, which is the Custom coil, measuring ca. 7K on a MultiMeter.

When you say hollowbody, you mean a Jazz box? What do you play with that hollowbody that you put a p'up many use for Metal?

HTH,

THe Custom coil of the 59/Custom Hybrid sounds very nice, and I'd think that is the right one to split to. I don't play metal with mine, but it is a wonderful pickup overall that does many things well. Split it to the Custom coil and let us know how it sounds.

HTH,
HI, well its small hollowbody, Phred guitars. its a cheapie im hot rodding. I got the pickup cheap, I bought it thinking the coil spit would be more pronounced than it is.

Hi thanks. so determine which coil is on in split position and then wire the other one?

Right. Normally, it splits to the Custom coil, but he may have reversed that.

Ok thanks, so looking at the pickup what is usually the "custom coil" the one with the duncan logo on it so the bottom one? thanks

I thought the slug coil of the Custom/59 hybrid was the 59. Hmmm. Gonna have to rethink things with what I mentioned in my hybrid thread.

Re: Jazz neck and 59/ custom hybrid bridge question, Split 59 is low in volume?

The slug coil is the Custom coil. It is furthest away from the bridge.

Ok so i guess he has it wired correctly..when i split the coil and tap on the pole pieces the one furthest from the bridge is active.
