Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

Does SD still make the bridge Jazz HB?

I'm having trouble finding it.

What would be the major drawbacks if I tried a neck Jazz in the bridge position? String spacing? Are there significant dimensional differences?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paolo

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

id try and get the bridge model. a jazz neck in the bridge, might be a little thin. i havent tried it so it might sound great, but im guessing most people would find it thin.
if you have to, order it either thru john who ive used and been happy with or lew who has a great reputation on here from those who have delt with him or your local shop. i try and buy stuff locally if i can, once you get to know the guys at the best shops in your area they usually take care of ya.

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

I have tried the 59 Neck on the bridge and it was too trebly. The Jazz neck it is suposed to have more treble than the 59, so results could dissapointing. I suggest you to try to find the mached version for the bridge. May be you could consider the 59B, some people find they are similar in sound having the 59 a bit less treble and a bit more bass.

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

I spoke with Seymour years ago about which humbucking bridge pickup he thought balanced best with vintage Strat neck and middle pickups and he told me a Jazz Neck used as a bridge pickup.

So I think it's safe to assume that it would be pretty bright and clear sounding...

I found that I prefer a 59 B or 59 TB for that application.

Jolly had a Jazz/Jazz LP, but he's left :/

maybe someone could ask him

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

I used a very good sounding Duncan Designed HB-102N (Jazz knockoff) in the bridge, and it was horrible. It sounds great in the neck (best "off brand" pickup I've come across), so I know its not just a crappy pup.

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

I remember Jolly had a clip comparison of that one and a few others in the bridge and it actually sounded pretty good from what I remember. It got pretty chunky and heavy. Where did Jolly go??

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

I located one on-line. Hopefully, they really do have it in stock.

I'm replacing the pickups in a Schecter TSH-1. I like the neck and the action, plus it's pretty. However, comparing the stock Duncan Designed P-90 and HB to my Epi LP Signature and my Squier Franken-guitar (Showmaster HB-S-HB with an SD Jazz in the neck, SD Jaguar in the center and SD Trembucker at the bridge) has been very disappointing.

So, the neck is getting an SD Vintage P-90 Soapbar and the SH-2B Jazz at the bridge. I'll let everyone know if it was worth the time, money and effort to make the change.

Re: Jazz neck pickup in the bridge position?

Got the pickups today and installed them.

Went smoothly except that the DD P-90 is shallower than the SD P-90. Therefore, out came the Dremel and after some nervous routing, I got an excellent fit for the neck P-90. Plus, I cut shallow channels for the wires which run through the neck PU cavity on the way to the switch. Nobody will every see it but me, but it looks much cleaner in there now.

The bridge HB swap was a breeze.

Sound wise, the SD P-90 is WAY better than the DD P-90. The pickup is much cleaner throughout the range, still gutsy but never muddy if you know what I mean. Surprisingly, the difference between the bridge pickups (DD HB 102B to an SD Jazz B) was not as drastic. A significant improvement, but not a big as the P-90's.

I guess I've been accustomed to the sound of a Jazz in the neck position. It sounds a bit thinner at the bridge. I guess that's to be expected. It's very clean and balanced. When played loud, it's got a lovely bite and maintains the balance through the mids and lows. It doesn't get muddy, either.

All-in-all, it's a huge improvement. I'm happy...
