"jazz" pup with covers

I'm not fussy about pickups as I can generally dial in a suitable tone with the amp or tone control on the git, but my ES-333 with the 490 set and a Sheraton with an SD "Jazz" neck pup are more than a bit sharper than I like. Because of this I rarely use the Sheraton and had planned on ultimately replacing the "jazz" with a Gibson 57 Classic my all time fave pup.

While I'm not a pup changer, I installed a set of covers on the pups in the 333 and I'm very happy with the results... so much so I plan on installing a cover of the "jazz" to see if I can get more use out of the Sheraton before I pull out the jazz.

So to that end I have decided to re-think my general dislike of the "jazz" to see if I can make it usable. If the cover alone doesn't do it, rather than pull it, I also plan on investigating an A2 magnet but I'm wondering about magnet fitment and whether or not "standard" magnets are usable?

Has anyone else experimented with the "jazz" pup like this and gotten satisfactory results?

the jazz with an a2 magnet is the alnico 2 pro humbucker and sounds great, smoother but still articulate. most humbucker magnets are the same size, 2.5" x .5" x .125 a cover is a fine option to neuter a bit of top end as well.

Yes, swap the magnet for an A2 and you'll likely be happy.

Edit: I'll add that I've actually used A2pros in my 335 and was very happy. Also the Gibson 57 has A2s.

In the context you're talking about, an A3 would work the arguably best for what you're looking for.

Talking specifically about Sheratons, in my personal experience, the arguably "best" sounding is a covered, A3-modded '59n for the neck and a covered, A2-modded '59b for the bridge for straight Jazz, that would also have wonderful tone with OD.

Thanks for the A3 suggestion. My main interest is to see if the "jazz" can be made usable. I do have one each A2 and A3 magnets and I ordered a cover for it, all these options are inexpensive and easy to do. Failing that working for me the only option I'd consider would be a Gibson 57 classic.

An A2 or A3-modded '59n will be a much better sounding alternative than a '57 Classic, anytime, anywhere, in any context, hands down. Mark my words!

The Jazz with an A2 mag (in other words, the A2Pro), will get you what you want and actually IMO will sound better than the 57 (I say that and I also am a 57 fan). And since you already have the pup and mag, it's a no-brainer.

Re: "jazz" pup with covers

Well, I decided on the A3 magnet and a black powder coated SD cover. The Bridge pup is a P94 so the all black "Jazz" looks better. It did just what I had hoped it would do take enough bite off of the sound so I could put round wound strings back on it.

Thx all for confirming my initial plan, it was a lot easier and cheaper than replacing the pup.
