JAZZBOX Pickups: help!

OK, some of you may remember my band director looking for $500 jazzboxes a while back. WELL we got them but the pickups aren't to his standards, SO we're looking for neck buckers that work well in JazzBoxes. I was thinking A2P first, seeing as it does Jazz so well in a strat, but not everyone in the program knows how to use a tone knob. Ideas are appreciated!

Re: JAZZBOX Pickups: help!

My fave SD neck pickups for archtops for a legit jazz tone are the Seth Lover, the Antiquity, or a good '59.

Re: JAZZBOX Pickups: help!

I don't think you can go wrong with the 59. Given the price point and the hard usage these will get, over-thinking, splitting hairs, sniffing corks, and spending more just gets you diminishing returns. Buy them used, and you'll get first-rate pickups that fit your budget.

Re: JAZZBOX Pickups: help!

I'd go with what Wes Montgomery used.

Wes used the same alnico 5 Gibson humbucker that the Duncan 59 is a clone of.

+1. Hard to beat a pair of '59's in a hollowbody. Their clarity highlights the guitar's acoustic overtones.

Re: JAZZBOX Pickups: help!

agree on the '59 especially with the amp's EQ and tone knob optimized ... would be interesting to hear what HS kids come up with in that regard ... wouldnt want it to get too woofy or nasal

now i'll make everyone laugh - when i was in my college music dept's jazz band, i played a small body solid core semi hollow with bill lawrence 500XLs (ceramics, as favored by noted jazz man dimebag darryl) .... sounded great .. very clear and balanced ... volume knob on ~7 and up to about ~9 for my solos ... tone ~8 ...

good luck

a 59 is the cheap way to get really nice tone.

if you want the best go find some benedetto pups, the b6 is a beautiful pup for a jazz box
