Jazzmaster Antiquity I Wiring Help

Hi Folks,

I have searched in internet far and wide and I still can't confirm the correct wiring. I bought a used Jazzmaster with these Antiquity I pickups installed on a custom wiring harness but everything just seemed a mess. I had to lower the neck PU almost to the guard and the bridge PU sky-high to even get close to a matched volume output. Sonically everything just sounded off. Which led to my suspicion that the neck and bridge were in the wrong positions. Unforuntely, there are no markings under the pups to distinguish whether it was a bridge or neck. However, one has a Yellow lead wire and the other a White lead. Side-by-side with leads facing same direction, the yellow lead is left of it's ground, the white lead is to the right of it's ground. If someone out there can help identify which color belongs to either neck or bridge I'd be eternally grateful!

Anyways, I did switch the positions and lo and behold, it sonically sounded MUCH better to me. Yellow lead in the neck position and White lead in the bridge. I'd still like to confirm I have them in the correct positions.

Secondly, I've seen some images of loaded pickguards with the leads facing opposite directions. One in particular shows what I believe are Antiquity II's, and the leads of the neck PU are facing the pickup selector toggle switch, but the leads of the bridge pickup originate on the opposite side (opposite the volume and tone knobs). Is this the correct configuration for all JM Antiquity's?

I would really appreciate any help or advice. First Jazzmaster, first Seymour Duncans, and first post here. Thank you!

Re: Jazzmaster Antiquity I Wiring Help

If you have a multimeter you can confirm the resistance of each pickup and correspond that to neck or bridge. You can even do this at the input rather than on the pickup leads. As for which side the leads should be on, as long as your combined/both on position isn't clucky/out of phase you should be fine.

Thanks for the tips. I don't have a multimeter on hand, but I should probably go pick one up. It definitely sounded out-of-phase.

So, I think I got it right now. I found an old diagram and the guitar just came alive. I'm actually amazed how good these pick-ups sound. Middle position hum-cancels and sounds killer so I think I'm good to go. Posting the diagram in the event someone ends up in a similar situation.
