JB 8?

I have done searches and found a few responses on an A8 mag in a JB.
I have a Parker Fly Mojo that came with Jazz/ JB. It is not easy to swap pickups in the Mojo (you have to cut the mounting screw brackets off, so you can't resell the pickup), so I'm doing some mag switching first. The Jazz was just too bright for me in this guitar, & the JB is very miiddy & honky (no offense whatever to JB fans, many make them sound great, they are just not my pickup).
I put a uoA5 in both the Jazz & JB for starters. The Jazz is now my neck pickup from heaven- smoother but still chimey with an improved low end. Sweet is an overused term that describes it very well!

The JB with the uo A5 is smoother but just lacks character. I think an A2 would be too low ouptput for the bridge in this guitar, + lacking in tight lows. So I'm interested in the A8 in the JB. Some love it, some say too hot (I would be very wiling to keep in low). I do play some clean & blues, not all hard rock. I also do coil split the bridge pickup. What do you think about A8 in a JB? (guitar is very lightweight but is all mahogany with mahogany neck).

depends on what you think is hot? personally, I like it.

it has a bit of sizzle when split, but you might already be getting better clean and/or split sounds from that Jazz.

The JB8 has a RAAWWWRR-RAAAWWWRR thing with it's midrange that you will love or hate. It's kinda hard to describe. Some people say it gets grating, I like it myself. You'll probably just have to try it and see if you like it. To me it's pretty much a straight metal pickup.

I think that's pretty fair. I might suggest that it's as much a hard rock pickup as it could be metal. I like a lot of the 80s rock/pop-metal/hard-rock/etc. stuff and it fits nicely. I think it makes the highs sing a little more.

I never got around to trying a JB2, but the JB8 was a significant improvement from stock. I still ended up switching back to a custom8 though, and it's staying put.

This is exactly my story too. The JB8 was better than stock, but it was still just too much. If you're looking for a screamer with just a touch of warmth as compared to ceramic, that's what you'll get. But it's straight out metal, as far as I'm concerned. I love the Custom 8 and Crazy 8, though.

The JB accepts magswapping awesomely too, like the customs. ceramic, alnico8, uoa5, a2. duncan should capitalize on that.

anyway, a JB with an a2 won't be really that weak or soft, but I think the JB8 is awesome. the same fluidity you want from a JB, but with sweeter highs and tighter lows, more crunch and punch in the mids yet retaining its cut. it's just a better pickup allround for lead AND rhythm.

JB8 is great and full meat sounding. It react fine on height adjustjment. If it is too much for you just set it lower.
BTW i liked the stock JB better with a 250k volume pot - warmer but still clear. With the 250k it has a lower volume too.

Success!
I put the A8 into the JB in my Parker Fly Mojo today.
It is perfect, balances with volume wise with the uoA5 Jazz in the neck and is smooth but subtly powerful. The top end is clear, smooth big mids & much better bottom than the stock JB or the uoA5 JB. It splits wonderfully & I can play Tele type lines with it split. The JB8 sounds much better than expected clean & moderately driven. I don't do metal & was pleasantly surprised how good it sounds clean & with moderate to medium OD, great for kinda hornlike blues cranked a bit + pretty good for funky rhythm stuff played clean.
This one is staying. It fits this particular guitar.

the A8 take everything up a notch, but sort of tightens the lows a bit. so it pretty much makes any pickup a little more of what it is. so take that an apply it to the JB. I'm not sure what your definition of 'honky' is, so I cannot comment. I think it sounds fine, but my first SD was a JB and I've built my rig around that pickup so it sounds normal to me.

the DD is a bit like a JB but harsher, although they are not the same pup with different mags. I didn't care for the DD, but it seems a lot of people consider it to have tighter lows than the JB which makes it hold together better for lower tunings. but that doesn't meant the DD and the JB8 are identical, other than they are both high output Duncan humbuckers.

I guess I mean "cocked-wah". Like when your doing single note
runs on the 5th and 6th string and it sounds like a wah is engaged.
Hate that.


I used to have a JB+ in a Jackson superstrat, and it was awesome. But I prefer alnico, and this is going in a Les Paul Custom. I don't wanna purchase one and it not be a good fit.
