JB/C5 hybrid

So last night I converted over my Dist./Cust. hybrid into the A5 version (JB/C5).

I guess I'm just more of an Alnico man. I lost the aggression from the ceramic mag and the juice it provided, but I gained quite a bit of thickness.

The thickness starts in the the bass, I have a lot more woof now courtesy of the C5 coil, It was IMMEDIATELY evident that I had extended bass frequencies.

The low mids are fewer now, but the ones I do have are smoother and more subtle.

The upper mids are there from the JB now, although not as much as the JB, not as nasally sounding.

The highs are smoother than they were, the first three strings sound much fatter with the A5 magnet.

Overall I like the change, the C5 slug coil balances very well with the JB screw coil. The pup is more versatile now, that much is certain! The split tones are smoother as well, but I expected as much.

I have practice tonight, more updates coming!

Re: JB/C5 hybrid

should be a cool mix. the mids of the jb with the bottom and top of the c5

Re: JB/C5 hybrid

I wonder which pickup would sound better?......the JB screw/C-5 slug, or visa versa?

My UGD pickup was a 15.3 Custom 5, to try and boost the mids just a tad. It worked, and sounds great, but I'd definitely be interested in other ways of achieving the same effect. My pickup resulted in a C-5 with a hint of CC and JB thrown in, but I'd imagine that a hybrid approach would allow it to be less hot, but the same effect.

Honestly man, I was thinking about you and your wanting a C5 with more mids while I was doing it! :laugh2: It works fairly well. More to come tomorrow, but the most definitive stuff I'll post thursday after a jam session with a drummer we are looking at.
