JB chrome cover

Clapton is God

I just picked up a used JB, and I'm looking to attach a chrome cover to it. I took a Gibson cover off of a 498T, and the holes were off. Anyone know where I can get a cover that fits the JB? Thanks.

Edit: I should add that I have seen Seymour Duncan offers a chrome cover, but it's a one size fits all, which sucks.

Re: JB chrome cover

Okay, so I got my digital calipers out. Looks like a Jazz neck (which is the same spacing as a Gibson 490R) is the smallest size, 49.2mm. The JB is slightly larger, so I guess that makes it 50mm, and the 498T 53mm.

....and I just realized the dude I bought the pup from just answered my question. Thanks for the JB (and Jazz, and AP), as well as the help!

Re: JB chrome cover

flip it over
does it say TB-4 or SH-4

if ya got a trembucker it is gonna be different than a Standard spaced

Re: JB chrome cover

Simplest, quickest, cheapest fix = just drill out the holes for the E, B, A, and E string screws with a bit that is slightly larger than the existing screw holes. This will allow some "fudging" of the spacing and will make the cover fit. I guarantee that the larger sized holes will not be noticed...even by you looking for it.

Re: JB chrome cover

Well, the Mojotone 50mm doesn't quite fit. The E's, and the B holes are slightly wider on the cover. I'm not going to take another gamble and see if the 49.2mm cover fits. My instincts tell me it won't. I've tried drilling covers out before and always got horrible results.

So, has anyone ever bought an aftermarket cover for an SH-4 (standard spaced) JB and had it fit? Thanks.

Re: JB chrome cover

I've drilled out 3-4 covers with excellent results. One, I had to drill quite a bit larger holes than the others, but it worked fine and can't even see that it was drilled.

Re: JB chrome cover

Thanks GuitarDoc.

I tried to do it with a hand drill before, and tore it all up. I received a drill press for xmas though, so I might attempt it. Still, it irks me that I can't buy one that will fit. I sent an email to SD customer service to see if they can point me in the right direction. SD's aftermarket covers say they fit "all SH series humbuckers." I can't see how that can be true with different neck and bridge spacing... I'll report back if I find anything new.

Re: JB chrome cover

Definitely want to use a drill press. Go very slow and if possible clamp the cover down on a scrap of wood (2x4). The drill will tend to grab and jerk the cover right out of your hands if you go too fast.

There are not separate bridge and neck spacings within SH series. SH series is all one dimension, 2" between outermost pole piece centres. (TB series is another dimension - that's what you're thinking of as a different bridge spacing.)

You have an SH-4, therefore the SD SH series cover will fit your pickup exactly, no need to drill anything.

Re: JB chrome cover

Well... that's pretty interesting. Just went down and took the cover off my 490R... it fit a Jazz Neck, JB, and Alnico Pro II neck. Friggin' damn..... Well, that solves that problem. Thanks!
