jb/custom (a5) vs. '59/custom (a5)

For those that have tried both, I really like to get impression on the feel, sound, harmonics, gain, output, and overall tone from these.

I am currently using a jb/custom a5, and it sounds amazing. But something in me wants to see what a 59/custom a5 would do for me. I like a little more tight bottom end in my sound...hence the a5. I'd just like to hear from those in the know. Thanks.

Lastly...thanks again to B2R for the instructions. Musicians helping musicians...what a grand concept. You rule.

Well...since everyone is so interested. :laugh2:

I decided to through my original Wolfgang pickup back in the guitar, and it a little midrange than the jb/custom a5. But...the hybrid was much more articulate and the harmonics just popped out of the thing. It seemeed to have a "bigger range" sonically than the Wolf pickup.

I'm giving serious thought of trying the 59/custom a5 hybrid to see how well that will work in my Wolfgang. If it has the hybrid qualities of the jb/custom a5, with the mid range of that Wolf pickup...I'll be right where I want to be.

Anyone?

I am going to put one (the bastard step-child of the '59/custom A2 I made) in a super strat but I am waiting on parts from warmoth so it will be a while until I have any "useful" input.

If you try the 59/Custom a5 let me know how it compares to the JB/Custom. I have the JB, my son has the 59 so we could go either way. I'd just like to do this once, though.

The 59/Custom Hybrid is more in the vintage sounding... the JB/Custom Hybrid has a more modern tone being a blend of those 2 pickups.

To me, the Custom coil with the 59 gives the 59 that extra oomph it is crying out for and the Custom coil with the JB fills in the bass, diminishes the mid-spike and gives it a less compressed and more clear/dynamic tone.

Both pickups will have a more expansive tonal range, great harmonics and articulation when compared to their traditional counterparts... that is the result of mis-matched coils. When you hit a big open chord using one of these it just sounds massive, yet every note rings true and clear!

BTR: Thank you for your great input. I was hoping you would show up for this one. Looks like the JB/C would work for my son and the 59/C for me.

I know this is an old thread but I rather post in this one than start a new one.

Is there any update on those 2 hybrid comparison?
I will receive my LP style warmoth guitar soon and those pickup seem like the could be great, I'd like some more info before though.

I still wanna hear how my guitar is gonna sound unplugged though before I buy any pickup for it, that way I'll know what to look for but in the meantime it'd be great to get some more info about the hybrid pickups.

Thanks guys.

Re: jb/custom (a5) vs. '59/custom (a5)

I use a 59/Custom/A8 in my Strat. I never tried the A5 but I did initially use an A2 and it was extremely "Van Halen-ish" through my EL34-driven amp. I just thought the bass just didn't do it for me and cleans had that thin "brang" kind of tone. So I tried the A8 and it just came alive. I like fat midrange, but this thing balanced the frequencies just right. Past the 12th fret there's almost a scooped "do-do" neck tone kind of thing going on, mixed with the fat mid "onk". I suspect I'm hearing both coils' different reaction to the magnet. The cleans are AMAZING and full. Since I use (currently) a one-pickup guitar, I wanted a pickup that could give me the bite and some neck-like qualities too. The A8 nails it with the hybrid, plus the "feel" is what I want now. It's hard to describe but I love it.

I really need to try this one of these days. I've got a gold bridge 59 from a Hamer that could really, really use some muscle-which is why it's got a Custom in there, now. I'm happy with it...but are we ever REALLY happy with it?
