JB/Custom hybrid

Well...I decided to just do it myself. I got a reverse zebra JB and a reverse zerba Custom, and made two hybrids from them. I installed them last night in my Wolfgangs and man oh man...do they sound good. Fat, thick, and harmonically complex. I thought Wolf pickups "sounded" good...but there is something magical about the hybrids. I purchased pickup tape from Stew Mac to re-tape them so they look a little more stock and nice than regular old electrical tape.

I can't thank B2R enough for the instructions. It looked much more difficult than it was...just unsolder the coil, switch, and resolder. Now I have a major hankering for the Jazz neck. Here's a couple of shots of the Wolfs with the new Duncans in them.

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

I've got a Distortion/Custom hybrid (large ceramic mag) very similiar to yours. I also tried the A5 mag in there. Both made great pups, not me, but great pups.

Congrats on you first Hybrids!

Some Jazz/59 Neck Hybrids will match up perfectly with those!

Did you make sure to shim the pickups up so they are close to the strings... some Wolfies I have seen have the Bridge pickup way too far away from the strings.

Kudos from the Hybrid Master :beerchug:

Yeah...I did the best I could. They are about 1/16th away. I am torn between which one sounds better, the hybrid with the ceramic magnet, or the alnico 5. One guitar is for e flat stuff, the other for standard tuning.

I can't wait to try them through my real setup as opposed to the line 6 guitar port.

Can you give me any info on the difference a 59/jazz hybrid would sound compared to a regular jazz neck pickup?

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

I'm probably in the minority when I say I prefer the hybrid with a ceramic, but that also goes with saying the Duncan Distortion is still my favorite Duncan of all.

The JB/Custom Hybrid shines with either the A5 or the Ceramic from the Custom... the Ceramic version is a bit more aggressive.
The 59/Jazz Neck Hybrid is just awesome... some people have described the Jazz neck as "sterile" sounding... with a 59 coil thrown in the equation you get that vintage woodiness combined with the distinct articulation of the Jazz... the mis-matched coils also add a whole new dimension of harmonic content... once you have experienced it, there is no turning back!

Ceramic magnets work fantastic with certain coils... the Duncan Custom and Distotion have been the staple of many classic guitar tones... as well as the DiMarzio Super Distortion which is similar to a Duncan Custom with the magnet from a Duncan Distortion.
The JB/Custom Hybrid with the smaller Ceramic from a Duncan Custom is a killer pickup...

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

I plan on making a set of 59/CC hybrids. I'll probably end up making a JB/Custom Hybrid too. A5 JB/Custom in the bridge and A5 CC/59 in the neck of my super Strat that still has yet to be completed :smack:

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

I still the original pickups. I might sell a set on the Bay. I want to keep atleast one set though.

That's probably true. I haven't tried a JB/Custom hybrid yet. But sure enough I do like a regular JB with the small ceramic better than an A5.
