JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

Hi dudes, i have finally bought a couple ibanez axes while i´m selling my bc richs (yeah it might be like..."are you mental?" but the money rules), so i have bought a prestige rga 121 (later with a new paintjob, now its like dark mahogany) and the prestige 7...

as the choice for the rga was easy (jb/59) and i have use it on a bunch of guitars i know it will suit my needs... but about the 7 string i only know i will pick the 59 7 for neck... which bridge pup would you recommend me out of this 3?

i know that most people would recommend a dimarzio set instead, but i prefer to try first a duncan choice and, if not happy, a dimarzio then...

thanks in advance ;)

Sir, I implore you. Why in the world would you downgrade to an Ibanez from two USA BC Riches? Are you mental? Maybe pull those crappy EMGs out and stick some Duncans in there.

because i´m going to go out an live with my girlfriend and need to save as much cash as i can... so its time to park the whole thing as a hobby and "donwgrade" to ibanez but save a lot of money while i continue playing guitars, not half the quality of the bc riches but good enough to play at home...

btw i like ibanez a lot, i started playing with them and always felt good with their necks, its a pitty that they don´t include aftermarket pups, machine tuners, pots, etc with their guitars... besides a new model with a duncan this year...anyway no comparison with the bc riches or a usa jackson... these 2 and prs are in a different league than the japanese brands (esp, caparison along with ibanez)

btw some opinions about the pup choice? :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

since u've aleady tried the JB, why not try the distortion?
its has tighter lows but doesnt have the midrange spike.
well, if you mainly play hard rock and metal then it would be a good choice, else JB would be good

Custom. It's not as loose as a JB (which, IMHO, is a good thing with a 7 string) while being "bigger" sounding than the Distortion.

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

How are you saving money selling your guitars when they money is already spent? Dude, listen don't sell your guitars. Don't let a chick get you to sell your axes. It will be a huge mistake. You will regret it forever. The money is already spent on them hang on to them. Don't be foolish. This has turned to an intervention not a pickup suggestion. You two will probably break up in a year or two at most anyway. Then you won't have your Riches. From one Rico fan to another DO NOT SELL THOSE GUITARS!!!

because my guitar teacher has a sponsor deal with ibanez and he can obtain series guitars (prestige or not, except j customs which he can obtain 1 or 2 per year) at the same price or lower than the dealer... so i have bought both prestiges for less than 1200€...and will sell quickly the bcrs for about 5000€ both...so 3800€ and the pickups which can go up to 300€ i have 3500€ more in te bank account...that can be a freezer, a tv, a microwave, a hifi, etc etc etc... which is useful even if we break up, thing that shouldn´t happen, but if it does, its my house after all.... that beeing said i´ll be a huge bc rich usa fan, but hey, it just a guitar and i´ll have other ones at home, i´m not changing my life, only my axes...

returning to the pup question :smack: , i´m looking for an overall good bridge pup (good for leads, good for rhythm, good under high gain) but i always prefer the pup to have more output... as the tone chart can´t tell me which one has more output of these 3 (i mean output in mVolts) i can only tell about the sound samples that the distortion can give me the sound im after...

but i don´t know which tone can i get for the lead playing, as i´m sure the rhythm sound will be awesome...what do you think?

thanks for the replies dudes

Not true IMO the distortion has the mid spike but its a wider spike. The distortion is even more midrangy than the JB IMO

so, which would be better for both rhythm and lead playing out of these two?

thanks a lot for the help

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

Honestly, I've always found the Custom to dominate both the JB and DD. Great, tight low end, and a very punchy tone. It's loud, fat, raw, aggressive... Probably my favorite Duncan pickup.

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

I put a Custom in my old Schecter 007 Elite... loved it!

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

You can't go wrong with either the Distortion or the Custom. The Custom is slightly less agressive.

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

Well if you like your guitar to scream ,smash ,slay and kill ,go with the DD
If you want it to punch ,kick ,stomp and bludgeon.Go with the custom!

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

ok, thanks a lot for the help...

one last question, does the custom have enough output? i mean, as the duncans do not show their output in milivolts like dimarzio does, how does it compare to the others (JB, DD, Dimarzios)?

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

The output level is fine on the Custom. It' just not as aggressive as the Distortion.

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

hi again, i just called the shop today to order the pickups and the guy tells me that the spanish dealer only orders the duncan distortion 7 model, only... not jb, not custom, not 59 neck nor anything... i know 7 string pups are not so popular but...anyway, i have found on german's music store custom 7- 59' but they are not available at this time... and on thomann the custom 7 is available, but not the 59', in fact, the pup is not shown on the list, so they are not asking for it... they have the jazz 7 string neck version... what do you think about this neck pup?

do the 59' worth it to wait a couple months and be ordered along with the custom or can i pick the jazz and get similar tones out of it?

thaks a lot ;)

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

I'd go for the Custom because you never read a bad review of it and I happen to love it!

The JB is Duncan's #1 selling humbucker...but you do read alot of reviews from players who find it a little to bright.

The Distortion is a JB with a ceramic magnet...I haven't tried it.

The Custom would a safe bet and it's a great pickup.

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

thanks lew, what about the neck choice if i can´t get the 59'... is the jazz also a good option? i can´t buy other one... not true, i can buy dimarzio models but i don´t want to

Re: JB, Custom or Distortion for an Ibanez rg 1527?

Well as i mentioned ,I would go with cutom for a more articulate tone and punch. But crying leads and screaming harmonics means Distortion.

Maybe you can order it direct from U.S.A.Or maybe England.Warwick (German distributer) is "not" a very good dealer IMHO ,so maybe U.S.A direct can help you more..

I don't use Neck Pu's alot ,so i am not a good source to get helpfull info!:D
