JB in an RG?

Hey guys, I have a basswood Ibanez RG2EX1 and I have been looking for a bridge pup with good chunk and nice highs. It seems the JB is the best choice for what I am looking for. I have already tried Bill Lawrences and a Dimarzio Drop Sonic and niether one really did it for me. Any opinion would be great. Oh and the Invader is not an option I really dislike that particular pup. I tend to play alot of heavier type stuff, but not "metal" per se, I like bands like Tool, the Deftones, Ministry, The Jesus Lizard so I guess I am looking for something pretty versatile.

the duncan custom definitely fits the bill:headbang:

Re: JB in an RG?

How would the Alternative 8 stack up? I noticed that its EQ'd the same but it uses the Alcino magnet opposed to the custom that uses the Ceramic bar.
Any thoughts?

Re: JB in an RG?

My concern is that I have heard that a JB is way to trebly in a basswood guitar, the Distortion has more treble and less bass, I really like the JB as I have heard it is more versatile and I have also heard that the Alternative 8 has many of the best characteristics of the JB and Distorton with its own unique character. I thought about a Dimarzio Super D but I want to give a Duncan a shot because while I have the Humbucker From Hell in my neck and absolutely love it. I hear that for the bridge Duncans tend to have more growl and bite. I have already burned out my 3 way switch twice because I am crappy a soldering, and I want to be sure that I get the right pup this time. Besides all this pickup switching is getting expensive. I appreciate the feedback I have gotten so far as I am new here and you all seem to be pretty cool with helping a brother out.

actually the JB in asswood is not that trebly
it is more trebly in alder so give it a shot you may really like it?
it is a real good pup but i prefer the duncan dist over it
the only problem you might have is that the RG's do not exactly have a fat tone and real good sustain acoustically
the JB sounds best in high resonant guitars with a solid bottom end
have you considered a tone zone?
kind of like a JB with more low mids and bass

Deftones would be the JB, because that's what he uses. I would definitely recommend the JB, but I don't know how it works in basswood. I've had it in agathis and in mahogany bodied instruments and loved it every time. In fact, now I own a Schecter C-1 Classic and it has the Jazz/JB. Love it.

There's an exchange policy, however. To be honest, some people love the JB, some people hate it. It's weird like that. So just get a JB, and if it doesn't work for you, use the exchange policy: call in and tell them what you do and don't like about the JB, and they'll hook you up with the right pickup. They're good at it.

Re: JB in an RG?

Thanks for all the input, I dont wanna keep spending cash on pickups so I think I'm gonna go with the JB and if it sucks in my Ibanez, I think I'll just save up some cash and maybe get an Epi Les Paul. I would much rather get a nice fat guitar at this point. Besides Ibanez has ****ty customer service and I have to special order my switches and stuff because no one in my city carries cheap aftermarket japanese parts, its all for fenders and gibsons. I have heard that Adam Jones from tool uses a JB in the bridge of his Paul and his tone kicks ass. So maybe that should be the answer I am looking for. Again thanks a ton for all of your input, this is the first forum I have posted in where I didn't get flamed for asking a simple question.

Re: JB in an RG?

Mine wasn't that bright, and I had it in a basswood RG too. Pretty chunky and angry if you wanted it to.

Re: JB in an RG?

Deftones would be the JB, because that's what he uses.

FWIW, Steph Carpenter has been using EMG 81s for a long time. Prior to that it was a JB, though.

The JB, Distortion, Custom, and Invader all sounded awesome in an old RG470 I used to have. My favorite was an old JB (wound to like 17k +) with a ceramic mag, making it a Distortion. That thing was amazing.
