when a humbucker is stock, one coil is putting more output into the other, while the other is doing the same thing. like they are fighting back and forth. this is known as series.
when it's split (obviously) it just uses one coil. (usually the inner coil, or the slug coil)
when it's in parralel, it's like being split, only it's using both coils independently. (like the 2 and 4 positions of a strat)
i've never used the JB, but since it uses completely balanced coils, it would be a very good pickup in parallel. it's like having the same pickup in the neck and middle of a strat and in the 4 position. this is why you've heard that it sounds very "strat" like. i read on Lews site that he has (or had) the JB in one of his LPs with the parallel option.

The JB in parallel sounds great. Reminds me a bit of a Tele bridge pickup. It's a strong, bright tone but still humbucking.
In parallel, the two coils are functioning like two side by side single coils...like having the neck and middle or middle and bridge pickups of a Strat combined.

My guitar has a JB in the bridge but i don't really like high output humbuckers. Now i have a switch that allows me tho have any of the two coils separately. I like i split very much but the sound of any of the coils it is pretty much the same. Since i have the switch i can try to set it to parallel/split to see how it works...

Ok, i have just tried it and it was like lew said...
Now i rewiried it to switch series/parallel. I like the parallel sound by itself. I gives me a clear subtle tone from the bidge, bright yet fat. The series version sounds very good when mixed with the 59 I have in the neck. Very, very nice tone, again fat and subtle.
The JB is a hight output humbucker and for me the clear tone it is very bad, harsh and plain. But when I've tried it in parallel, or mixed with a lower output humbucker it had a very nice sound.
I had this combo in another guitar and i didn't like the tone of both pick together. But in this guitar it is totally different. May be it is because this is a 25.5 scale and the previous one was a 24.75...

so split in 2 and 4 positions means using only the coil from the neck-bucker
and the coil from the bridge-bucker in this :

From the circutic in positions 2 and 4 you will have one bucker coil in parallel with the middle single coil. And I think this it is the tipical switching option for a HSH guitar.
A humbucker in parallel mode has its two coils conected in the same way you have bridge + middle in a strat (but in this case are closer!). A good thing it is they still buck the hum (like in a strat).
