when a humbucker is stock, one coil is putting more output into the other, while the other is doing the same thing. like they are fighting back and forth. this is known as series.
when it's split (obviously) it just uses one coil. (usually the inner coil, or the slug coil)
when it's in parralel, it's like being split, only it's using both coils independently. (like the 2 and 4 positions of a strat)
i've never used the JB, but since it uses completely balanced coils, it would be a very good pickup in parallel. it's like having the same pickup in the neck and middle of a strat and in the 4 position. this is why you've heard that it sounds very "strat" like. i read on Lews site that he has (or had) the JB in one of his LPs with the parallel option.
