JB/Jazz in a PRS Santana Standard Se?

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS Santana Standard Se?

I tried it in mine and did not like it. I liked the JB better with an A2 magnet and the Jazz with an UOA5 magnet in the PRS, but that isn't a set I settled on. I like the Gibson 498t in one with a regular Jazz neck in mine. I also like the Dimarzio Air Zone and Humbucker from Hell neck. The Seth set is great, as is the Gibson 57 Classic / 57 classic-plus set. The CustomCustom bridge and Pearly Gates Neck were great as well, although they are very warm. Depends on what you are looking for.

I like pickups that give the PRS SE some fatness and a little aggression. It can sound thin with some otherwise good pickups, and too smooth and bland with some others. If you have a chance, check your pots with a meter. I have had a couple of new SE's with 500k pots that meter closer to 300 and had to replace them. I also really like D'Addario 9.5 gauge strings on them.

The SE can sound a little thin and lifeless, IMO. You might want to try an A8 mag in the JB before putting it in your SE. The Jazz is an interesting pup...it can sound very trebly in some guitars, and very full and phat in others. You could try it the way it is (with the A5 mag) and see how it sounds. It may be just fine. But I would be inclined to put an A2 mag in it from the get go and see how that sounds first. It should give some warmth to the SE.

For one of my last builds I used some very warm sounding swamp ash for the body, maple neck with rosewood board. I have the stock JB and Jazz in it and they both sound very phat, full, rich, warm, and wonderful with a hint of aggression in the bridge. It's not what I would consider the typical JB/Jazz sound. But to my ears, it is a perfect combo for this guitar.

Well my guitar has a solid mahogany body and neck with rosewood frets. Hoping these pups give it the blues sound I'm going for.

JB/Jazz would not be my first pick for Blues. I would go with a Seth set, or Gibson 57 Classics, or CustomCustom / Pearly gates neck set. I almost forgot I had the 59 set in one for quite a while too, and they were great as well. That would be a fantastic Blues set.

i have a set of prails in my prs se and i think they sound great. i use the p90 settings most of the time and have the neck flipped so the rail is toward the neck

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS Santana Standard Se?

Is the stock pickup in the neck sounding too bloated? Since its a 24.5 scale with mahogany neck & body, the Full Shred would give it a clear and bluesier sound I think.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS Santana Standard Se?

i think the jazz will do fine in the neck of that guitar

I had a JB/Jazz set in an SE singlecut, and I quite liked them. But if I were going to do it over again, I'd be more inclined to go with a Whole Lotta Humbucker set.

The Jazz was very nice in the neck, and the JB did what it does best in the bridge, but something like the WLH set would be more versatile, IMHO.

Finally got my JB/jazz pickups installed in my guitar and I'm satisfied with the results. Paired with my Blues Cube Stage amplifier, it give me the tones I was looking for.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS Santana Standard Se?

If the pickups in the Santana SE are as mediocre as the pickups that came in my SE Singlecuts, I’d think the Jazz and JB would be a big improvement.

In my own Korean made SE’s and in my USA made Custom 22’s I use Seth Lovers without covers, Antiquitys, PG’s...and a set of 59’s with RCA5 magnets.

Basically, PAF clones with slightly different flavors

I am happy there is another successful transplant!

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS Santana Standard Se?

You replace the nut? 2 SE prs and both had the worst tuning of any guitar I have owned. I was really disappointed

I also flip the bridge so that the Rail is closer to the bridge. It makes the Rail and P-90 coils sound more distinct from each other increasing the tonal variety. I find that with the P-90 coil next to the bridge, the P-90 and Rail tones are too similar.
