JB jr Help. Distortion level not going up. Pls advise

I am using a Fender american deluxe strat with a JB Jr. at the bridge and a DS-1 Pedal. I noticed that as i raise the JB pickup , the clean output increases but the distorted output remains the same even to the point that even when the ds-1 pedal distortion and volume is maxed out, the clean volume is still somewhat louder as i switch to compare. And i dont think the ped is the prob because when i tested it on my Gibson Lp studio, the output does increase as i step on the Ds-1 ped as it always should be. And when i compare the the volume on to the neck pickup which is a SCN fender pickup, the distorted volume is still the same, but when i switch back to clean the JB is louder again. Is there like a volume threshold for the distorted sound of the JB or single coil buckers. Sorry i know this is a weird question but this is really what is happening. Only the clean volume increase as i raise the pickup, the distorted volume doesn't...really strange....

Are you saying that raising the pickup raises the volume, but doesn't fuzz it up more? What kind of amp do you use?

Re: JB jr Help. Distortion level not going up. Pls advise

I use a Peavey Classic 30 tube amp. Not really just the fuzz. For example if i am using the neck pickup which is a SCN Fender, while on clean then i step on the ds-1 ped there is a significant volume increase aside from the fuzz when the volume of the ped is at 3 oclock. but with the JB jr, the volume doesn't go up when i step on the ped. In fact the volume while on clean of the JB is already louder than when it is distorted. And when i compare the distorted volume of the neck and JB bridge, they are about the same. Shouldn't the bridge be louder? since when they are both clean it actually is louder.

That sounds kind of funny. I don't have the knowledge to explain why this could be happening. But to start, I would plug the guitar straight into the amp, and set it to a really clean and quiet setting. This is the setting I would use while adjusting the pickups.

Ya i know..It's pretty weird. Been playing for 6 years and i never experienced anything like this...Thanks for the advice though. I'll just keep messin around with it guess. But does anybody else out there have any knowledge about a problem like this?

You're using too much distortion. If your DS-1's volume and distortion are up all the way then you're just getting oversaturated mush...try backin off on your pedal distortion and turn the amp up a little more. You get the amp cooking and the tubes distorting a little bit, then you don't need as much overdrive from your pedal, and your tone can 'breathe' a little more.

If that doesn't work, try a different pedal. Stock DS-1's are okay but most people seem to get theirs modded...and even then, my modded DS-1 only does a few of the different tones i need, and i've got more pedals for the other ones heh.

+1 on that. It may also be that you're hearing the dynamic range of the pickup. I'm guessing that the Fender SCN has a wider dynamic range than the JB. i.e., if you play the SCN hard, you'll get more punch and output (relative to playing softly) than the JB. My experince with the JB is that it's really compressed sounding, which can be good or bad depending on what you're trying to do.

Thanks bud i think you nailed it. I raised my amp volume and lowered my ped level, the sound finally mixed well. The volume raised as i stepped on it. On a side note, i might get a keeley ultra mod ds-1, is it that much better? considering its a 100bucks more

Ya i think you're right as well, the jb does sound compressed. Should i just return the stock SCN? And what would be a good replacement if ever. Something in between a hotrails and a JB jr i guess. I play punk, metal and alt rock for the distortion sound, and jazz and blues stuff when on clean. What pickup would have a good balance for these two sounds? Single coil bridge of course.
