does anybody have experience with both these pickups and if so what are the differences in distortion and tone between both?

Substantial. The narrow aperture of the Jr makes it sound pretty different to the full-size version (tone is thinner, not as ballsy - doesn't push the amp as hard), but you can remedy that with discriminating use of EQ. Have a dig for older threads like this one.
