JB jr

While on the whole I think Dimarzio has better sounding single coil sized hum buckers I’m really starting to dig the sound of the jb jr. especially on strats. Great harmonics.

Re: JB jr

I've no experience with them. If you like it, cool.
How's it compare to a Fast 2?

Re: JB jr

I like the neck model quite a bit, though I find the split and parallel modes too thin to be useable.

Re: JB jr

It isn't my favorite single-sized humbucker, but then the JB isn't one of my favorites, either. I tend to like warmer, less barky pickups. I think it would be great for an 80s fan.

Re: JB jr

I can confirm that :) I have only had the pleasure of playing it once, but I loved it. I don't know any better way to describe it than JB jr.; it is a bit smaller and more polite than the humbucker counterpart, but it is still excellent. I would think that it would work particularly well in slightly less guitar-centric music, where you still wanted that voicing without it sticking out as much as the full thing.

Re: JB jr

Well I have to say I love it in my Strat, its in the bridge. It sure works for me doing Classic Rock.

Re: JB jr

Ya know, the JB Jr. is widely considered the best neck single coil sized humbucker and the Hot Rails is consider the best bridge. Without debating the validity of the previous statement what do y'all think the best middle single coil sized HB is? You don't hear too much about them.

Re: JB jr

I'd vote for Vintage Rails, unless single coil stacks are in the running, then I'd vote Classic Strat Stack.

Re: JB jr

Super Distortion S in the bridge, hands down. Nice and full with plenty of highs (unlike the Hot Rails).

Of all the crickets I received when asking about the JB Jr. Neck model here on SDUGF, there's absolutely no way it could be widely regarded; rather it's better described as a diamond in the rough. I use one with a TB-12; the SJBJ-1N is a phenomenal neck pickup.

However, with the SD-S in the bridge, I'd take the Satch Track, no question.

Lil' Screamin' Demon Bridge for the middle.

If you want a scorcher for the neck, FT2 all the way.

I would disagree , I have the JB jr in the bridge works great in my Godin Strat which has a HDR the tones I get are fantastic with this pickup. I am not changing middle or neck pickups that I have now because they are very good, but if I were to put middle and neck pickups in another Strat it would be Vintage rails.

Re: JB jr

My 1993 American Strat was modded to ONLY have a bridge pickup...only the volume knob (moved down one slot) is connected. The bottom tone knob is there, but it’s not connected. The pickup is a JB Jr. I’ve recorded 10 full length albums and played too many shows to count with this setup. Amps used for recordings have been Sovtek 100h, Soldano Hot Rod 50XL and Peavey 5150. Amps used live have been Peavey 5150, JCM 2000 DSL100 and JMP 2204.

Maybe it’s a combination of the way I play (all downstrum ala Johnny Ramone) and 11 gauge strings, but I have always gotten a very big, thick, Les Paul-like tone from this guitar through these amps. I’ve had both the old style and new style JB Jr in it...both great.

For lower output Stratty or high output I tend to agree. For medium output it's a toss-up and really depends on whether you like the somewhat exaggerated DiMarzio "character" (for lack of a better word) that some of the models have.

I don't get the love for Vintage Rails or Duckbuckers. Give me a Cruiser, Lace Sensor or stacked single coil over either of those pickups any day.

Re: JB jr

From sound samples that I’ve heard I’m personally impressed with the Tone Zone strat from Dimarzio.

Re: JB jr

The BC-2 rounds out the list for the high output models.

Not a fan of the FT2 in the bridge. I'd take the JB Jr. and Hot Rails over that one.

I think one of the Godin Progression guitars has a jb jr in it stock.

Re: JB jr

FWIW I really like the lil 59 in strats (heard it’s good on Teles too but I don’t own one) and while hot rails are a bit one trick pony IMHO they do that well.

Yes they do. It has a bit beefier sound in the passive mode which I like, but push the button on the HDR , and bam the active kicks in man I have to tell you its awesome gives a good bite brings tones alive.

From what I have heard I like the Dimarzio Tone Zone S better than the regular Tone Zone and the JB Jr. I like brightness and harmonics of the JB and the fatness of the Tone Zone S. I understand this is all a matter of personal taste so it’s just my opinion. Also this is solely based on sound clips that I’ve heard on YouTube.
