JB or Breed

boogie

New member
My guitar has a maple neck bolt on an alder body, vintage tremolo. I am using the boogie amps which has tons of bass.
I am looking for a fat, warm, hot tone. Could you guys give me some tips? I am worried about the JB doesnot have enough basses and mids and the Breed has too much basses and mids.

Cheers!

Re: JB or Breed

If you want something like a JB but with stronger bass and mids try a Duncan Custom...That pickup was designed with an alder/maple bolt on guitar in mind! It's a ceramic pickup which I don't usally like but it is a killer pickup!

Re: JB or Breed

Thanks Mr the guy who invented!

but like I mentioned, my boogie amps has tons of BASS, so maybe the the enhanced mids and basses pups sound kinda muddy, fuzzy.

Re: JB or Breed

Why does it have to be those 2 particular pickups? You seem worried that neither of them will work so why not something else then? Out of those 2 id go with the Breed though I Just yesterday put one in the bridge of my strat which is same setup as yours and the midrange and bass arnt as extreme as the Dimarzio charts make it out to be and belive me this thing is a god send for me its tone is warm and hot with awesome harmonics it really does it for me.

Re: JB or Breed

I put a breed in my Sl-2 and it was the pickup that I had been looking for ,for a very long time. My problem was I was looking for a pickup to cover all the stuff I was doing in my band at the time and that ranged from Dio and Ozzy to Fuel and creed and it just wasn't possible.

The breed is a medium output with a very smooth balanced sound. It doesn't have as many highs as the Custom Custom did, at least not in my SL-2.

Jason, what's up man, long time no talk!

Re: JB or Breed

the breed neck model was suggested to me by them when I was putting my HH strat together, it should have the same characteristics as the bridge model, but with less bass and mids, look at dimarzio's description and tone chart. Another pup to consider from dimarzio is the Air Zone or tone zone, I personally would go with the air zone because it's supposed to be a little softer, more dynamic pup. The breed and zone pups are very fat and BIG sounding pups, listen to their sound clips on the website.

Re: JB or Breed

I think the Breed is just God send to us. I will buy a set of the Breed. Could you guys have any tips of other cool neck pups to match the Breed bridge?
By the way, how the Breed with the multipole 5-way sounds? or just do the 3 way? Thanks!!

Re: JB or Breed

I was about to ask about the neck, I think one of the best pups dimarzio makes is the Paf pro, it's powerfull, speaks clearly and is EXTREMELY versatile. It's got a cool glassy thing on high strings, not piercing fender glassy, but more transparent sounding. and with a 5 way super switch it's even cooler, my strat is setup like that see my sig.

Re: JB or Breed

The breed is a good choice for what u described its a great pup which actually cuts through quite well and has alot of bite, it will warm up the bridge no problem with enough mids and bass without sounding muddy, great in the bridge of a strat. Alncio 5 mag, med-high output pup. Its very similar to the JB but with more push and thickness in the mids (lower mids). Solos sound thick, and powerchords are great. Overal its a great pup in the right guitar.

The paf pro is a great pup for the neck to match it with, (ihave that exact setup in my sg), fairly transparent and cuts through while also sounding big.
The breed neck model is supposed to be a bit louder and fatter than the paf pro. I like less mids and a bit more cut for the neck tho.

But I like duncans better than all of the above, they have a more raw quality and they sound clearer and more articulate to me. :burnout:

Re: JB or Breed

guys you are right. I have two PAF Pro, for sure they are great pups for any position. but I'd like to put them on a mahogany body, it would sound sweet to me.

Re: JB or Breed

I have used an Air Norton in the neck spot since I had a guitar with 2 pups in it. I love the clean sound it gets, and when you add didstortion it is one of the only neck pickups that I have heard or played that I could get pinch harmonics from.

Re: JB or Breed

yeah~ The Air Norton is in my another guitar(basswood body)'s neck position right now, it's dirt sounds not warm enough for me. Maybe it is because of the tonewoods?

Now I decide to go for a set of Breed for my HSH, but I have no idea about the route. Which route sounds better? A set of Breed with a middle single coil with 5 way switch or A set of Breed with 5 way switch? Thanks.

Cheers!

Dills, how does the Breed "Neck" Model sound like compared to a PAF Pro??? Also, can you post a sound clip of you playing the Breed's???

I havent played a breed neck but it is "supposed" to be according to their website and a few others on this forum smoother, fatter, and louder than the paf pro's. The paf pro i wud say has more precsence and is more transparent, i dont like very middy neck pickups so i prefer duncans more organic Paf type neck pickups for more articulation.

I dont know how to post clips. Guys such as RG 2570, and Mac P will have a good idea what it sounds like here is a link to one of the earlier posts about the breed and Paf Pro.

Re: JB or Breed

At first I cud say i really liked dimarzios, and i wanted lots of mids and bass and wanted everything sounding big and fat, But after putting a set of duncans in my other axe i actually look forward to playing it more than my dimarzio loaded one, it just had a rawness and clearness that I liked and i figured that i dont need to make everything sound fat cos the bass player can do the low stuff, and when paying live the dimarzio's wouldnt cut through nearly as much especially if you have already a guitarist and keyboard player in the mix. I think ive been converted to duncans myself for what I play.
