JB or DD opinions

I just put a TB-4 in my MIM strat.I had a HB103 Duncan Designed in before and really liked it alot but wanted to step it up.Should I have swapped the magnet and put in a DD? I was on the fence for a week about swapping because the HB is supposed to be based on the DD, but I put in the TB4 first as is.Now it sounds thinner .Who's tried both in their strats ? Will the DD give me some thickness and bass back? Somehow I think I should have swapped the magnets first.

This isn't making much sense to me; but it's the morning, so forgive me if I'm misunderstanding.

What do you mean by swapping the magnet and putting in a DD? Do you mean putting the HB-103's magnet in the JB? That wouldn't have given you a DD, as the HB-103 doesn't have an oversized ceramic, just a standard one, AFAIK.

AS for a JB sounding thing, I'd say it's wired wrong; split or parallel. Is it hum cancelling? It shouldn't be thin, and the DD isn't much thicker than the JB at all.

It was morning when I wrote that post. I think I made my question too confusing.I simply wonder if the DD would have a little less treble and more bass than a JB.The JB works and sounds good just a little just a little "thinner" sounding than the HB103.Maybe I just got lucky and have a great sounding Duncan Designed.I did not know the magnet to a DD was oversized though.Hmm,I thought I could do a swap try both.I'll have to think on this one more I guess.Maybe I should try a Custom.

The DD will have more bass, less of a high mid spike, be more aggressive, and be a tad brighter, to my ears at least.

the DD seems to definately have more bass, ive played some thru a peavey bandit 112 and i can get a decent EVH tone

The Distortion seems to have more bass, but in reality, it's got more low mids. The JB seems really bright, but spposedly it's just the upper mids. Hey, if it sounds bright, it is bright. Either way, the Distortion will be a little beefier than the JB. No way the DD is brighter. The Distortion does have an oversized ceramic magnet, but you should be able to swap them out just fine. Quite a few guys have done it before. Don't know what knd of pots you have in your Strat, but the JB was originally designed to work with 250k pots. The lower value tends to warm it up and smooth it out a little.

Yup. The DD has a more thick bottom end. I think most people make the mistake of saymg the DD has more bass because of the lack of upper mids compared to the JB.

I have a what I assume is a regular sized ceramic magnet.Would I lose output or some kind of tone with it.Is it possible to get an oversized at one the supply sites?.

Use the ceramic magnet that you have. While the JB with a regular ceramic magnet may not have quite as much push as the DD, the ceramic magnet that you have will still make a noticeable change in tone and output.

I stuck a ceramic magnet into my JB. The magnet was actually just slightly shorter than a standard magnet; I got it from a stock Agile pup.

I tried the ceramic because I wasn't satisfied with the JB. After doing the switch, I like it much better. The overall tone is much thicker and smoother. The low end is great, and was one thing I didn't like about the JB.

I swapped out the A5 and put in the ceramic and I like it sooo much better.Not as high and still screams and the lows sound fuller.I'm glad I did it.
