JB + Pearly Gates - Split query

What I want is a JB (or Distortion) in the bridge, and a Pearly Gates in the neck with push pulls for splitting. Easy peasy.

What I want to know is, which coil remains active?

I want the coil closest to neck in the pearly gates to be active when split, but the coil closest to bridge active in the JB.

Does anyone know which coil remains active in these pickups when split? And if it's not the coil I want, can I just spin the pickup around and mount it upside down to get the desired single coil positioning?

I was thinking of just wiring it up, splitting the pickup and tapping the coils with a screwdriver to see which was active and then just spin the pickup around to get the desired coil position.

Oh and you dont want the JB screw coil active... you want the slug coil active. The physical position of the screw coil make its really bright and tinny its not a very usable sound. The slug coil is better.

But then again im not fond of either of those pups split...

Ok, food for thought.
Do you mind me asking what it is you don't like? Your opinion would much appreciated.
The guy at my local music store reckons 'This would be the best' for what I want to do.
Essentially I want to have two studio guitars. One active pickups (which is already dialled in) and one passive guitar.
What I want is Humbucker neck and bridge, but specific split tones.
Neck split I want to be like a 'strat, 61 or 67, bridge I want to sound like a Tele (spank, clunk ice pick in the ear).

I was advised that pearly gates and JB split give this tone.
However, when I asked the guy what the difference between pearly gates and Alnico pro II was he replied 'They're actually the same pickup, it's just Seymour Duncan marketing bullsh#t'.

So yeah, maybe I shouldn't take his advice.
Always used Actives (mostly) so not very familiar with this passive stuff.

Maybe I'll just stick to actives :-X

Re: JB + Pearly Gates - Split query

The only way to really get a strat or tele sound is with rod magnet pickups and in the case of the tele the appropriate bridge and copper backing on the pup. Rio grande makes sets that will split to strat single sounds perfectly but their humbucker tones are a bit different. Likewise many normal humbuckers split well but don't sound exactly like a strat but give a nice single coil tone. Decide which is more important the humbucker tone or the single coil one

Re: JB + Pearly Gates - Split query

I have a Pearly Gates neck pickup split with a Triple Shot on a Les Paul. While the PG has some usable Split Tones, it is not a start tone. For that I would recommend from Duncan the StagMag. Sounds like a start when split and in Humbucker mode it's got a fairly PAFish neck tone. The Distortion in the bridge might be what you are after there.

Just my experience

Re: JB + Pearly Gates - Split query

The StagMag is what you want for the neck. BUT wire it parallel for the humbucker mode. It will give you a much more usable tone, especially in the neck.

For the bridge pup, use a Quarter Pound with coil tap mounted in a humbucker ring.

No, the A2P and the PG are NOT the same pup. They have different resistance and resonant peaks, and they have different output...PGn=513mv, A2Pn=452mv, PGb=543mv, A2Pb=499mv.

Re: JB + Pearly Gates - Split query

Thanks audiocheck, I'll have a look at the stagmag too.

Meh.. the stagmag does nothing the riogrande true splits dont do better. Even better they come with flat poles so you dont have the silly stagger with overly loud g strings.

Stag mag uses humbucker bobbin where the Riograndes use strat size bobbins. If you are after true strat tone they are a better option.
