JB sounds great clean - myth?

I think the JB sounds like garbage clean with a 250k pot. I also think the Cool Rails in the neck with a 250k pot does not sound good clean. This is in an alder strat with a maple neck and through the natural channel of an Orange Rocker 30, which is about as non-dirty as you can get.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

well i could see that in an alder strat, but in my mahogany body guitars its pretty nice, its by far the best clean sound of any high output bucker i've heard (even better tapped), and i think thats what most people mean by great cleans. Its not gonna match most lower output pups with alnicos for cleans, but none of my other 12K-17K pups have nearly as good clean sound

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

On my Ibanez (basswood body, maple fretboard/neck, 500k pots) the JB sounds like fried @ss clean. I've never found a use for it on a clean setting.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

Nah, I don't use mine clean. I think if you roll of the volume on the guitar a bit, it will sound better though.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

I like mine clean, but it is very picky about how my amp is dialed in. In parallel it sounds amazing clean. Try putting a series/parallel push-pull in your guitar.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

I have no qualms about the JB's cleans in my Mahogany/Maple Schecter. Even with a high gain head having decent cleans at best, it still sounds good enough for my ears.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

it doesn't have amazing cleans, just has much better than other high outputs. Compared to something like a jazz it sucks ass for sure

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

Worst sounding pickup for cleans ever IMO. Thin, tinny, clanky, and annoying.

My EMG81 sounds 100x better.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

Wow, I'm surprised that so many people love their JB on a clean amp!

I'll have to tweak some knobs it seems.

I totally agree with you Ratherdashing. Though in series I'm still looking for JB to please my ear yet, but in parallel mode it's becoming my favorite feature. IMHO, it has an acceptable clean or decent single-coil voice like. I don't want to wire the JB series/split because I want to keep my guitar to stay quite along with my DMZ Virtual Vintage. I used 250K pots with .02 cap like what Lew of Lewsguitar.com has recommdended me. I use it a lot now more than the humbucking mode.:chairfall

i would also like to chime in and say that the cool rails sounds amazing in the neck.... clean..... with a 250 pot.
yep.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

What do you do to get it from lightly distorting? I play mine a little harder and all of a sudden it like sounds a tad muddy.

Eh, I haven't done much "light distortion" stuff with the JB. Up until recently I only had one amp, and that amp either does balls-to-the-wall kick your ass gain, or ultra-clean ;).

I like the JB well enough for both applications.

My comment was also aimed towards the cool rails as well. I LOVE that pickup clean. Its like a 59 done *right* IMHO.

yah, i had a little 59 in the middle position and hated it. ..... not really, it wasnt as good as the cool rails though.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

I think that the more scooped sounding a pickup is, the better it sounds for cleans, which is why an A5 single coil is the benchmark for clean tone.

Since the JB and Cool rails are rich in high mids, and NOT scooped, they aren't the most desirable. For cleans, the Jazz, 59, and C5 are the best humbuckers, and they also sound good with gain. All Alnico 5.

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

I'm not a fan of the JB's clean sounds. Maybe I just suck at dialing them in, but I don't have any problems with my other pickups... :dunno:

Re: JB sounds great clean - myth?

Seymour sounds pretty amazing when playing his telegib with JB, clean.
