JB vs JBjr vs Hot Rails...my recent experience...

I've got two Stratocasters...a 1993 American Standard and a 1999 Deluxe Double Fat Strat (MIM...since converted to be a bridge pickup only guitar).

I had a Hot Rails in my American Standard for several years. I found the Hot Rails to be a monster of a pickup. For what I do, it's truly great.

I Have a JB Trembucker in my MIM strat. I find the JB to be another fantastic pickup. It does have more of an overall sweeter tone to it than the Hot Rails. The Hot Rails has more of a balls out jaggedness to it.

A friend of mine sent me his JB Jr that he's not using anymore today. I used the JB Jr in my American Standard for about a decade before the pickup died mid show due to corrosion from sweat (this is an issue that SD's excellent new single coil size humbucker design prevents).

I got the JB Jr installed into my American Standard today. You know, I've read a lot on various forums (including this one) about how the Lil' 59 is SD's only single coil size humbucker that sounds like it's full sized counterpart. I'm here to report that, in my experience, this isn't an accurate statement. This JB Jr sounds amazingly like it's full size counterpart. It's got the exact same overall tonal qualities of it's full size brother. In fact, so much so that it's difficult to tell a sonic difference when I A-B the guitars.

Perhaps it's my amp (Marshall JCM 2000 DSL100) or my playing style or my hands. I dunno. But they really sound quite like the same pickup to me.

Overall, I'm preferring the sweetness of the JB/JB Jr over the raunch of the Hot Rails.

Is the output difference noticable? Does the pick attack react or feel similar? These are the things I found different between the DMZ PAF Pro and their ProTrack (originally advertised as the single coil size version of the PAF Pro). The tones were comparable but the output and the feel weren't so comparable. A compressor and booster was needed to get those back.

I'm going in the opposite direction, well, kinda-sorta. I wasn't satisfied with the JB Jr. Neck in the neck position, so I picked up a Hot Rails Neck. I won't be able to install it for a little while, but I'm pretty excited to try it. I bought two JB Jr. Necks for the neck and middle and will likely put one of them up for sale.

I've seen the Pro Track billed as a PAF, but not a PAF Pro. If you're looking for a single-sized PAF Pro, I think The Chopper is the better fit.

With my amp and my guitars and my fingers, I notice no real difference whatsoever. Maybe (and I mean MAYBE) there's a tiny bit of difference in wideness or bigness of sound, but even that I'm not sure of as it's such a minute difference as to be neglible.

There's zero difference in pick attack responsiveness.

Early after release it was advertised as a single coil size version of the PAF Pro, hence the name ProTrack. At that time they only had about 4, maybe 5, models in the FastTrack style.

Awesome! So happy your new pickup works for you!

Thanks for the comparison Cliff. Very useful.

...Don't most people not describe the Lil' '59 as "accurate?"

Nope, what I have read many times are comments akin to, "the Lil '59 is the only SD single coil size humbucker that sounds like the full size version." Then there are an awful lot of people who confidently state "you can never get a full size humbucker sound from those single coil size humbuckers."

One thing I forgot to mention in my OP is that both of my Strats are wired directly to the volume pot only. There are no tone control options at all. The MIA with JB Jr has its stock 250k volume pot and the MIM with JB has its stock 500k volume pot.

I A-B'd them again today. They sounded virtually identical. My wife couldn't tell the difference at all. I'll A-B them with the guys in my band and see if they hear any noticeable difference. I expect they won't hear much if any difference either.
