JB with A8 = Big Win

This is not new news to most here..... but in case you're on the fence about what to swap into that JB that sounds so 'off' in the mids, try an A8 magnet (A2 probably sounds great too, but I wanted some more push in mine).... Just got a MIJ Jackson Rhoads, JB in the bridge (and neck!), knew I didn't like the JB as is... put in an UOA5 but not really much better. Read some posts here recommending A8, but some say it's 'loud' oh well.

The change is dramatic -- mids are nice, more emphasis on the lower mids than the original A5 (some say it has Dimarzio SD flavor -- I agree), and smoother across all freqs. And it's not 'loud' to me, just about same as original magnet.

Long story short, stop debating -- give it a try, it's muuuuuch better!

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

I tried an A8 in one of my JB's and didn't like it as much. It seemed to lose the harmonics that I like. I went with the UOA5 and preferred it.
But that's the good thing about having different grades of magnets available. What doesn't work for one person might be just the thing for another.

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

I think i am going to do the A8 mag swap on the JB that is in my 2016 Charvel Pro Mod 1. Its a bit thin sounding so it could use an extra punch. If i dont like that, I will opt for even more output with the Alternative 8.

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

I have a Dean Cadillac that had a JB in it. This JB + 500k pots and this guitar were just not jelling. Put the A8 in there and it tweaked it in all the right ways! Little more and tighter booty, little less mids and shifted a touch lower, took the shriek out of the highs.

Just awesome.

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

It's not overwhelmingly loud with an A8? JB is already pretty strong for my taste. That might be mostly the penetrating nature of the tone though. I'd been thinking about trying an A4 in one of mine.

In lower winds for me an A8 has increased output dramatically but the JB really is a special case, a different animal altogether.

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

No, a JB8 isn't too loud. It's at about the same height as my 8.5k Phat Cat and 7.5k Seth/Ant. A4 sounds great in it too.

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

yeah, did that too some years ago. First i swapped in a ceramic and thought it was better when playing with drive. Afterwards a got an A8 and liked it overall. But i thought it suffered in the parallel sound department, which i needed because its a one pickup superstrat.

Re: JB with A8 = Big Win

^ Double thick alnico mags are quality. You'll like it better.

Went to A4 in my JB. Makes it less crinky and smooths it out.
