JB with an Alnico 4 magnet

I am contemplating replacing the Alnico 5 magnet in a JB with an Alnico 4 magnet. What kind of tonal change can I expect. It would most likely be put in a mid-1990's Hamer USA Studio Archtop.

I would guess you'd get a little brighter and more articulate tone...but that's just a guess. Lindy uses alnico 4 magnets in his humbuckers but he doesn't like to wind them hotter than 10K or so. The JB is over 16K!

I wonder if it would make the upper mid spike that *some* complain about more harsh?

Me too. Although using 250K pots eliminates that spike entirely.

Re: JB with an Alnico 4 magnet

interesting idea. id probably want to stick with the a5 because the a4 would make it sound brigther, but if that archtop is a very dark voiced guitar than maybe the a4 will do the trick in it for u. its worth a shot. let us know how it winds up for you if you do go through with it.

Re: JB with an Alnico 4 magnet

I think anybody mentioned that he did that before - go search. I would think it wont help since in my book the A4 is not too far away from a A5, but it cured the boominess in a my neck DiMarzio PAF.
I run now a JB with a A8 in my maple/alder strat. Great combo far better than the standard but it has not the beef of my Custom 8. The Annihilater (Wicked Lester called it so) rules by far.

How would you review your JB 8 and Custom 8 vs the JB and Custom ?
( Wicked Lester seems to have deleted his review of Custom8 )
I use a Demon 8 myself , and I am tempted with Custom 8 for another guitar .
