JB with no tone control?

So, I've got a new toy - a JB-7 which I want to install in the bridge position of my Schecter A7+ (i.e. the one with the licenced Floyd).

I'm in the middle of ordering my other new toy, an Air Norton 7, to go in the neck position.

Long ago I took the tone control out of the guitar and replaced it with an EMG-SPC (see here), leaving it with just the EMG-SPC and a master volume pot (500k).

I've read a lot about how some people find the JB too bright, and it'll be made brighter by having no tone control.

Does anyone know how to wire in a resistor and cap to achieve the effect of having a tone control fitted but fully open? And does anyone know if that would be a problem with the EMG-SPC?

I suppose another alternative is to try a 250k volume pot, but I'm not sure what that will do to the air norton.

Thanks!

Re: JB with no tone control?

It totally depends on the guitar it's in. When I had a JB in an alder strat, it was bright in the upper mids. Didn't like it much in that guitar. In my Kramer Baretta (maple body), the JB is right at home. Not bright at all, sounds fabulous. No tone control either.

I believe your A7 Plus is made of mahogany. The JB shouldn't be too bright in that guitar unless it's already bright by nature. If so, a 250k volume pot will take care of that but might affect the Air Norton in the neck in a not pleasant way, dunno for sure. I've used the Air Norton with 500k pots but not 250k.

+1.

The JB with a SPC should be very interesting! I tried a Distortion with a SPC and it knocked my d1ck in the dirt! Sounded great! The JB uses the same coils as the Distortion BTW. Try the JB with the SPC and go from there. You can always add a small cap later.

I believe it is mahogany, but couldn't swear to it. It's certainly heavy enough!

Yeah, I love the SPC! I've got them in a couple of guitars now, seemed logical since I don't vary the tone control much. I think it's great for making clean stuff sound warmer, and of course when I crank the gain up too ;)

It sounds good with the stock Duncan-designed pickups the guitar came with, but it's definitely time for a pickup upgrade.

I guess the answer is to try it with the volume pot and SPC set-up I have now, then either add a cap or change the volume control later if I'm unhappy. I'm just being lazy and trying to avoid getting the soldering iron out twice :)

Re: JB with no tone control?

A JB with the SPC would be pretty dang hot. The SPC boosts the same frequencies that are already spiked on the JB. It'll cut through like a machete. :burnout:

Not quite. It does boost the mids but, not so much the high mids which are the ones present in a JB.

That is not what my ears have told me anyway. It will make it hot but, its a good hot. I was very surprised with a DD and the SPC how good it was even though it was hotter than hell.
