Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

    Huge props to Jeff Seal.

Last night, he let me bring my DIY 13 Watter over to his shop after hours. It's had an intermittent problem which has not yielded to my intermitent troubleshooting for over two years. Fiannly fed up, I asked Mr. Seal to put a second set of eyes & hands on it to see if he could find the problem.

Since I had already ruled out a lot of things, like cold solder joints, a microphonic tube, most lead dress issues, I was stumped, and starting to think there was a parasitic oscillation that I couldn't see.

Of course, once we got it out of it case and onto the bench, it sat there for an HOUR, working perfectly. The upside was that this was a hour-long lesson for me in "how to troubleshoot an amp". I picked up some new tricks, but we didn't find the problem.

Right after I said , "I vote we give up." The amp made its funny noise. I yelled - that's it! That's the noise! Jeff dove back inside, and found the culprit in about a minute. A stupid freekin' input jack.

Jeff cleaned and tightened the contacts, and it's fixed. If I ever get around to replacing my plexiglass-over-printed-paper faceplate with a real engraved plastic one, I'll rip those stupid Cliffs jacks out and replace them with good old American-style Switchcraft.

Anyway, thanks to Jeff for a fun and educational evening.

That's great about Jeff....I Like the guy alot also...Reminds me of the way Doug Hoffman used to treat me when he still lived here in Florida...I used to drive 2 hours to Doug's shop and stand over him while he would trouble shoot my BF Pro Reverb problem and my old Marshall head,Doug knew alot and he'd find the problems very quickly..Guys like Jeff are getting really hard to find in today's busy world!

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

I am jealous. That would have been fun I bet. I have no idea how to t/s amps other than the usual culprits like tubes, loose wires and other visually easy to spot stuff.

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

Jeff has helped me many many times. He is the man. I've been using cliff jacks on my EL84 creations but I'm with you on switchcraft I think they appear to be more reliable. I know folks have used them with great success for years, but all that plastic makes me a bit nervous. What they do very well, though, is insulate the jack from the chassis. So, switchcraft grounds directly to the chassis. Cliff jacks have better looks to me as well. But, yes, I agree I'm a switchcraft guy where possible from this point onward.

What kills me is, I have a bunch of shoulder washers for insulating Switchcraft jacks from the chassis, but I put those *&^%$#@~! Cliffs in there anyway, 'cuz they look cool. I'm an idiot.

At least you got your amp problem fixed though..

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

Jeff did a hell of a job on my Marshall, basically did a complete custom wiring scheme, and it is really, really good. I need to get in touch with him, and arrange to ship it to him. It has become increasingly noisy over the past year, and I can't get it right. I don't know if it needs caps or something else, but I know Jeff can make it perfect.

Also, you'll never find a nicer guy than Mr. Seal. One of the rare class acts.

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

i wish i could get my 80's 2204 to Jeff for a fix up.... but it would cost too much to ship from Canada..

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

Yeah, I live an hour from Houston and I'm sure my Bandmaster needs some work, but the guy is so busy I hate to ask him. Anyone know someone who does good work in the area?

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

I'm like Jeff he rebuilt my 2204, and man does it sound killer!

Re: Jeff Seal: the man, the myth, the legend.

Jeff is an exceptionally kind and generous man. Good amp-man as well.
