Jekyll & Hyde

What kind of sound do they have? I've had a few recommendations for them, but there are no dealers around so i can't really try them out. The kind of distortion i like: pearl jam, soundgarden, queens of the stoneage, audioslave, rage... nothing too heavy

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

I gigged one a couple of times...one side is a TS clone and the other is a heavier Ratlike distortion. Pretty good bang for the buck.......check the gearpage, used $80-$100.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

i think the tube screamer side is pretty nice but the other side is kinda noisy if you run the gain too high

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

The thing is I didnt like the JnH despite having alot of people rave over it.
I tried to like it but it didnt work too well.

My opinion is that the overdrive side didnt sound as good as the TS7)modded to 808 specs. The overall feel of it was muddy. the bass boost switch didnt exactly help things and turning the tone knob up created fizz.

The Distortion side was rather compressed, didnt fill up space well and was kinda flat tonally. It'll be good for some applications I am sure but it didnt have character like perhaps a CrunchBox or RAT.

Just my opinion. Trust your ears.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

I own a J&H and I've been very pleased with it. I don't find it fizzy nor noisy. The only time I find it noisy is when both sides are on. But I never use it that way. And since everybody has different equipment and hears things differently YMMV.

Here's a clip of me running thru the clean channel of my amp and messing with the J&H. First 1:40 is the Jekyll side and the rest is the Hyde side.

I was using my Strat in the clip above. I didn't get a chance to record the Hyde side with my LP. I can get a big JCM800 tone with that combo. With that said, I mostly just use the Jekyll side as a boost for my amp's distortion channel.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

solid thanks. I play a g & l legacy (aka a strat) so that's actually probably a lot what it will sound like with mine. I liked the range there so i guess i might just go for it

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

I scored mine for 30 bucks. I was totally happy with my Rat, but when I plugged the J&H in, the Rat went. The OD side is not my tone, but I use humbuckers and P94, I know it would be more useful if I use my Strat. The distortion side rocks. I read where the Strokes use this pedal and the MXR Micro Amp. I had pulled the Micro Amp off my board and used the TS9, so I put the Micro Amp on (chain position is very important, had to move it around) and BAM...it fattened the sound perfectly, just when I thought it could'nt get any better. I love it. The TS9 is my lead boost now. Very tastey licks myxolidian...

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

I know the guitarists for the strokes use JnH pedals and their tones (especially the lead tones) are killer.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

I use mine with my Legacy through the clean channel of my TSL. It gives a great break up sound and in conjunction with my Duplexer, I don't now switch channels on the amp. That said, the Jekyll side really warms up the amps drive channels. I love mine!

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

thanks to you and all for the help, but i actually don't know what a duplexor is or where i can find one. any info you can give?

thanks

Re: Jekyll & Hyde

Sorry, my bad. It's a prototype of the Carl Martin Plexitone pedal. I currently have this on most of the time, and use the J side of the J&H as a boost and the H side if I need a lot of gain. Very versatile and I'm not having to do a lot of tap dancing as I can control the sound a lot from my guitar. I can get most tones from sparkly clean to metal this way.
