Jimmy Page Custom Shop pups

I just bought my first Gibson , a '00 Classic, and I know that the pups are going to be way too hot for my style, a Gibson Burstbucker 3 in the neck and a 498T in the bridge. I was just wondering how much they are, how long does it take to get them, and if anyone has any sound clips so that I can hear them? Any other information on them would be apperciated. Thanks.

Doug Marks of metalmethod.com had a set of those put in a restored LP and they sound awesome! That guitar is featured in his Classic Metal Licks dvd. He might have a sample video/soundclip at his site of that dvd.

He does, I just checked click on 'All Products' and then click on the classic metal licks phrase in blue and there is a video clip example.

i think robert s has a set of page pickups maybe he will reply, they sound like very heavily waxed and slightly overwound 59's from what i gathered

A set of '59s will do JP and are a lot cheaper. I just brought mine out of retirement to replace the '57 Classics in my LP Classic. I'd forgotten just how punchy and fun to play they are. Great classic rock tones, great all-around versatile pups.

What is the biggest difference between '59 and JPCS sound wise? Is there a really big difference, or bearly noticable? Thanks.

I heard the JPCS are slightly overwound 59's. Maybe the reason is that JP likes using the coil taps- I has the original Gibson 57 classic PAF's in my 86 Les Paul Custom years back. I took the pickup apart, soldered another wire between the 2 coils for a coil tap, installed a switch, and was able to nail the bluesy tones from Since I've Been Loving You.

However, ALOT of the early Led Zep stuff was a Telecaster through a Marshall. I bought a Kramer telecaster (the musicyo one) that came stock with SD Five-Two pickups in it. The bridge pickup covers alot of early zep through a Marshall DSL401, though I may switch it out with a '54 for some raunchier tones- the Five-Two is a little too smooth for my tastes

The JPs are a bit different sounding from the 59s. It's not a huge difference but they are different. The JPs are a little hotter and a bit warmer sounding but the real difference is in the overall character of the tone. The JPs sound a bit more organic and complex sounding in the same way that Antiquities sound different than a Pearly Gates set.

Under a lot of gain it will be hard to hear a difference between the JPs and 59s but clean or slightly pushed tones really allows you to hear the differences in the two models. Where you really hear it the most is when both pickups are selected at the same time and adding the split coil and phase stuff with the JPs and it's fairly easy to nail some of JPs more characteristic tones.

I've never heard someone say that they can hear a difference between a potted pickup and a "heavily" potted pickup. The only time I hear extra wax is if I forget to clean my ears.

They are a little hotter and a little warmer but still in the PAF range tonally to my ears.

sorry ment for that to come out more like, from what others have said, the jp's are heavily potted. don't know what that would change but, maybe something.

I was just messing with you a little. There is too much snow and not enough to do around here lately. To be honest though, I have never heard there is a degree of potting. Unless I am mistaken, all potted Duncans go into the same potting thing-a-ma-jig. The wax either displaces the air in the coils and between the coils and the cover or it doesn't.

maybe it was another kind of pickup then, someone commented on how much wax was in there and that it was really packed full.

how much snow do you have up there, i only have about 3 inches of snow here. i like the snow though so i think it should snow more and leave me home from work to play my guitars and work on building pedals all day

We got 12" a couple of days ago and I kept busy shovelling that out saturday. After 2 days of drifting with my wife driving up and down the drive way a few times I had to scrape it all out and shovel again today. It's been down near zero for a couple of days and thats kept us in but tonight it's a balmy 20 degrees out there so things are looking up.

Uncovered pickups from the factory tend to have a lot less wax on them than pickups that come covered and have the covers removed. That may have been part of it.

I too don't know much about various degrees of potting. But gotta say that heard the term "light potting" (I guess it was Peter Florance using it). On the other hand RG BBQs that I have/had had lotsa more wax than SD's HB's.

Moreover, I too cannot say that I heard the effects of potting simply because I did not wanna mess with a great non-potted HB pickup (like my ants and all). But I can say that I heard some pickup winding folk saying that potting will eliminate some of the harmonics, thus, 3d tonal features kinda would suffer. Dunno!

12'' and O degrees is tough, it got pretty warm here but it was down below zero some mornings. not cool when you have to work hanging out of a drive through window at starbucks i am waiting on enough snow to close all the roads down here so i can take an extra day off work
