Tubes are good! new ones that is , after swapping a few preamp tubes, and hearing some really nice improvements , I decided to go with the advise Eddie from Eurotubes gave me and ReTube my Peavey Ultra with 4 highgain ECC83S and a matched pair of 6L6GC
I had already had 2 high gain JJs in V2&V3 ,but tung-Sol in V1 and the phase Inverter.....I was afraid that highgain tubes in these locations would be too harsh or grainy sounding...... I was wrong
It simply opened up the amp, the gain sounded better and clearer at higher settings and the active EQ and even the clean channel sounded so much fuller and musical
The guys at Eurotubes have alot of experience with alot of amps, dont be afraid to take their advice,
I was thinking I would have a cleaner clean channel with a lower gain tube driving it, but the HG JJ really added some sparkel and chime and actual musical tones to a rather dull sounding Peavey clean.
of course replacing the no name 6L6's with JJ's also contributed in a big way
My Peavey Ultra actually sounds like a tube amp now! YAY!
