Joe Walsh was a big LEslie user back in those days. I'm pretty sure Turn to Stone WAS a Leslie, and not a phase shifter. Of course it could have been both. He was heavily into experimenting with gear back in tose days.
Bit o' trivia: Joe Walsh was on the cover of the very first Guitar Player mag I ever saw, back in what, 1975? He was talking about different effects orders and opening up his Fender amps and moving components around - ideas I'd never heard of before. Probably damaged me for life.
a friend of mine met Joe last fall in Florida and ended up going to 3-4 shows.... wish i could say it was me... Joe is a guitar god in many ways.... i never liked the Eagles but Joe's solo stuff and the James Gang are among my fav's!
Joe is a great song writer too. The cool tones just compliment the great songs he writes.
A lot of rock bands in the 70's used Leslies in unconventional ways. Yes and Led Zeppelin have tunes with vocals run through a Leslie. There are a lot of 70's tunes with guitars played through Leslies too.
Walsh's uneffected tone - a Les Paul through an old loud Marshall - is classic. It's the quintessential 70s rock tone. Crunchy and punchy, with a smoother high end than the sizzle that became the norm in the 80's. That Marshall woof and thump are there, but the tone of the guitar and its vintage humbuckers comes through moreso than the with chunky, higher gain tones that prevailed in the 80's.

That ain't a Les Paul on Funk#49 and a lot of the James Gang though... I'd be shocked. Sounds like a Tele to me... would love to know what amp he played through, probably an old Marshall or something.
Doesn't matter much...
Joe Walsh is great.
