John Mayer: Playing Familiar Shapes in New Places

Re: John Mayer: Playing Familiar Shapes in New Places

That's a cool video. It's good to see even the learned pro musician's fall into the same ruts that I (or any of us for that matter) would, but have the ability and expressiveness to be able to dig himself back out of that rut.

Plus, I almost made that exact same video the other day. I know, it would have been embarassing.

Nice idea. Gonna have to try that out next time I pull the axe out. Always seems I'm stuck in a rut.

As 'pretty' as his image is the guy is a guitar player that obviously seems to care about the craft and respect it at the same time. It's going to be interesting to see where he goes with that blog.

Re: John Mayer: Playing Familiar Shapes in New Places

Well, the blog is a "Mid-Action Report" for the process of writing and recording his next album, which we could infer will be titled "Battle Studies"

I too, am very interested in where he goes with the blog, if it will be more 'mechanics of writing and playing,' or if it will focus on getting the listener in a specific "frame of mind" for the new album. Note that his latest post was a link to the song "Count Basie Orchestra - Lil' Darlin'" and he posted "Charley Jordan - "Keep It Clean"" about a week ago. This could be the most guitar oriented album yet, and it could be the most big-band and jazz influenced album yet. I am interested to see what happens.

The attention to the craft and approach is not a new modus operandi for Mayer.
