July 1982 Japanese Market 62 RI Strat (JV Serial)...Lew?

Hello all (and the knowledgable Lew) ,

I have the strat mentioned in the header...ice pick sounding bridge p/up and all. It sounds like no other (new) strat I've ever played. It doesn't have that "breakup" that newer strats have & quite frankly I haven't played a custom shop strat that I have found as satisfying as mine. Lew(or anyone else)....do you happen to have any "JV" strats? I'm dying to know if mine/yours has one of those "320 gram" trems or more of a vintage type one. The first series was unveiled in spring '82 & my neck is dated summer of 82. I thought my bridge might be American because I know USA was sending certain parts over. The body is slighly heavier than an average strat but nowhere the lug weight of the USA lates 70 early eighties "Dan Smith" USA Strats. The p/ups are the rare USA "redback" alnico w/the "82" stamp on the back. This is really a sweet strat....and I highly recommend anyone who's looking for a custom shop strat or tele to consider researching & finding a "JV" serial Fender. I had 1300.00 in my pocket to find a used custom shop strat because I wanted a strat. After researching the living hell out of strats....I found this one & rolled the dice & spent 1200.00 on it...worth every penny. Nowhere does it say squire nor is the "export" stamp anywhere on the body. The reason for my post is that a buddy of mine is a serious collector & owns an actual '62. When he had my guitar doing a setup he told me "you could close your eyes & not know the difference between my '62 & this one" The pickuos in the real '62 were sweeter....I've played & heard the axe & it's unbelievably awesome but I didn't have the chance to shoot the two out. I took his word for it. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to get it closer to the real deal.....trem? p/ups? I don't know if those redback 82's are worth a crap or not....yes it sounds great but not as good as that '62. Maybe I should just leave it alone?

thanks

If you want info on JV Fender guitars go to www.guitarsjapan.com and e-mail Andrew...he is THE MAN on these guitars, as far as trying to get yours to sound like the 62 try some pickups...the trems that came in the JV guitars are good trems, and it's a good thing because I think that they are metric and a US reissue trem will not fit on it...that said I am NOT 100% sure but ANdrew will know for sure as he has several of these guitars. If it were my guitar I would get some new pups and call it a day...I LOVE Alnico II pups, Lew favors Alnico 5 in the neck and middle and Alnico II in the bridge...just try something and see what you like...BTW an Antiquity Texas Hot Custom bridge will do away with icepick bridge pup...as will the Twangbanger...You can also NEVER go wrong with Antiquity pickups, and if for some reason they are not to your liking...you can sell them quick around here!!!

good luck

wow! Thanks fellas...very informative. BTW...metric? I thought the original Japanese re-issues were spec'ed absolutely to the vintage classics that Fender Japan bought in the states?

I have a great link for info on MIJ Strats at work but I'm at home right now.

I've weighed the vibrato/bridge assmebly in every Japanese Strat I own, including a rare Fender Japan Mary Kaye made for the Japanse Market and all have weighed less than the three actual '62 and '63 assemblies I own.

None of my Japanese Strats are older than about 1985 - 88 though.

The lighter vibratos don't sound bad! In fact they sound excellant. Just not quite as deep and full as the Fender '62 RI and my originals.

I think the light MIJ ones may be made by Gotoh because so far, they have been identical to the old Gotoh I purchased years ago, never used and which I still have in the original box.
