Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

So ES, did you like any of them? Did you own one of the Minutemen?

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

Depends on the model...the smaller amps don't have the weird twin-T filters in the tone stack; that circuit gets that oh so elusive Brian Jones tweezy tone that only schnauzers can hear. I did have problems finding replacements for the PI transformer and the 6EU7's. The Falcon and the Minuteman were some of the better sounding and reliable Gibson amps from that time...have fun...

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

im hoping to be able to get into it this weekend between the friday gig and three tele bridge pups i gotta wind that id like to get out before a blues showcase saturday night which i would love to get a chance to give the amp a real test.

mine does have the foot switch and is in great cosmetic shape which kinda worrys me a little since it might not have been used much and i really dont feel like changing the filter caps right away

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

Thank you both verry much! Jeremy, when I start working on mine this June, would you mind if I PM you with any questions? I won't inundate you with questions or anything, but I might have something small and you seem to know a lot about this stuff. I know a lot more about guitars and how they work than amps.

I'm also looking for tube recommendations, but I'll post a formal topic about that later.

Anyways, thanks to both of you! I'd love to hear how it all works out for you Jeremy.

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

yeah no worrys. i get plenty of emails and pms on how to do things, a few more wont hurt at all. from what ive heard the amp sounds very nice, cant wait to get it running it tip top shape

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

lol Alright thanks a bunch. I hope you like it, cause then that means I probably will too. Later!

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

I have a 62 Falcon that I've had since 92 or so.

The big thing that kept the Gibson amps from being really sought after is that they're not built as ruggedly as the Fender stuff.

Great sounding amps though.

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

Good to hear dude, thanks! I have read that, but I've also read that they're pretty rugged on their own. Fenders are freakin tanks though!

I read that the tolex on these old Minutemen (and others I'd assume) is bulletproof almost. True? But the footswitches are apparently very delicate.

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

so, umm, when you get tired of it, you'll sell it to me right?

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

lol I might end up selling it, and you'll definitely get preferential treatment.

I've only owned one tube amp that I was in love with, and that was my Crate Vintage Club 20 (you can see it in my profile picture). It was gorgeous, it was loud, and it broke up better than most amps. But I had to sell it! Had to try something new! I went and tried an old Peavey The Classic from the 70's, best cleans and the biggest sounding amp (it was a 2x12), but had NO overdrive. Busted speaker probably, but I didn't care to change anything. Then it was a Crate V1512, I loved that one too (probably the best all around). Sold it cause I needed money. Then it was the Blues Jr., which I liked but didn't love. Perhaps tube/speaker changes would've converted me. I needed money regardless.

We'll see if I love this one! I really like tremolo (the only amp I owned with tremolo was the Peavey). I also really like that *apparently* it breaks up fantastically. We'll see! I can't wait.

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

well, I'm kinda looking for some cheap, obscure, low wattage, single channel tube amp to run on opposite side of the BJr in a stereo set-up. you know, something with a "WTF" factor.

this amp would definitely fit the bill

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

You might think of a Vintage Club 20, like I was saying. Beautiful amps, and really great sounding. I was actually looking to buy one on eBay today, but the only one up there is going for >$200. You should find one for $150 or so.

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

Hey skyydogg, here's the Vintage Club 20 and 30 on eBay, so you can see em, if you care. The 20 would fit your bill better, but I reall think you'd like it dude. But $250 is a little steep.

Vintage Club 20
Vintage Club 30

Re: Just bought my 5th tube amp in the last year, a '65 Gibson Minuteman!

the guy who's selling the 20 can't take pictures ... lol

I might just try and build one, like the marshall 18 watt clone. only with a full tones stack

Airline.

Valco made them for Montgomery Wards department store. Awesome little amps. Nobody knows what they are though.

Those are pretty cool too. Definitely need a OD pedal with one of those though!
