Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

At first it sounded dusty. Like when I would play it sounded crackley. When I turn knobs, no noise.

We played, and after the song was done, it was doin that "eng" sound that an amp can do.

Loud and not good. It was making an "amp noise" that a high gain amp would make, but I'm not playing high gain. Lots of uneeded noise.

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

Is that 'high gain amp noise' a whistle or feedback of some sort? That combined with the 'dusty' sound you describe could indicate a microphonic preamp tube. Take the back panel off of the amp and tap on your preamp tubes with a pencil or similar. You may hear a faint click if the tubes are working properly, whereas a microphonic tube will produce much louder noise.

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

Yeah I'd check the tubes first.

Btw....you should do a review on that head, I've been very curious

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

There isn't a whistle or feedback. It's more just noise. I'll check the tubes. Thanks gents.

I can do a review. I'm so damn happy with the tone from this amp.

Borrow an amp for the gig until you get it sorted out. You don't want to use this on a gig.

Those are very well received amps...well made.
Just to be clear.....do not "check" the tubes, install new tubes one at a time.
Where is your gig.?

San Francisco. I'll be using my Dark Terror for the gig.

When playing a "recently working just fine" amplifier in a new venue, and finding said amp to be extremely noisy (in a humming, buzzing way) CHECK TO MAKE SURE IT"S NOT PLUGGED INTO A STAGE LIGHTING DIMMER OUTLET.

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

Just curious.
I lived in The Sunset (Judah and 24) for about 18 years...as you can see, I do not live there anymore.
best

Oh nice man. So weird story. After our first song my Dark Terror started making lots of noise. Could be becuase I hadn't played it in a while. Pulled the Avatar back out, and it was clean the whole show. ****ing weird

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

That is weird.
There are several possibilities.
One of which (as some have mentioned already) is that you were plugged into a circuit that was cycling some type of equipment, or had a noisy/intermittent dimmer, etc etc etc.
Guess it turned out for the best...

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

Also, look into getting a power conditioner. That will help give your equipment a nice clean signal, in case you play somewhere that doesn't have very clean electricity, causing all kinda of noise and malfunction.

Re: Just did sound check and my amp is really noisy

Your amp will have different levels of noises in every club. The worst noise I ever had was in a strip club. The stage was at the back end of the "runway." The walls were all mirrored, and there were all sorts of crazy lights everywhere in the place. Lighting in clubs can really play hell on the normally-acceptable levels of buzz that most amps make. I just got in the habit of turning down in between songs.
