Re: Just got a A8 what to put it in
Well, the custom 8 seems to be well recieved by most people who try it, that would be the safe choice, but it seems like some experimentation is in order :fingersx:, but really that may be too much work. Anyway, if you have the tonal characteristics of the pickup in mind, in general this is how A8 compares:
Ceramic - A8's bottom is pretty much the same, very tight w/ lots of bite, but A8 has more mids and softer highs, and is smoother as you go from mids to highs. Also I found the mids to be raunchier than those of ceramic (I used the hot rails in my strat to compare)
A5 - To me, A8 sounds like A5 with a bunch more mids, higher output, kind of like a cross between A5 and ceramic. If you were to put an A8 in a pickup that previously had A5, this increase in mids would be most noticable. The highs are also a touch sweeter IMO
A2 - From my experience, A2 is worlds softer than A8 across the spectrum, with a similar EQ curve from the lower mids to the highs. However, A8 has much more bass than A2, and the overall character is closer to A5, very Alnico-y if you know what I mean. Also, A8 (to my ears) doesn't seem as sweet as A2 or even A3.
BTW, all my experience w/ A8 comes from swapping magnets out in my lester, which has a PGn (now w/ A3) and a 59/Custom bridge (now w/ A2). I've tried both of these pickups with A2, A3, A4, A5, and A8 except for the PGn, which I haven't tried the A8 in. For the ceramic comparison, like I said, I compared it with the hot rails in my strat (great pickup BTW).
Also, if you look up A8 using the search function, you'll find alot of info from people who use it in their gear. But, like Rowan said, I haven't hear of anybody using it in the tone zone, it would be neat to try it out.
