Just got my EHX "Octavix" fuzz! :)

Unfortuntately, I only got the bridge pickup working, as I killed the neck P90 , trying to get the cover off with a POS soldering iron.

anyways..:

I was not really about to buy a fuzz/distortion pedal, since my amp got really great high gain tones.... but one night, I was drunk on "home made pruno" and made the purchase.

...

The fuzz goes from "Big Muff" territory, to a kind of "blown up preamp" kinda tone, nasty but nice-
aswell as having an "octave" pot, that blends in the kind of octave-up fuzz tone, you heard Hendrix have.

There's a "9v/24v" switch, that greatly changes the response, and tone of the pedal.

It's much "splattier" and "dirtier" than the onboard distortion, and that's a really good thing. Can't wait to try it with a functioning neck pickup + "both pickups on" setting :D

... It also came! with a 9V adaptor! :o Never had that happen with a pedal before.

A good fuzz- it doesn't clean up or sound like a fuzz-face- it's more like a "hot rodded/ trashed up big muff" :)

Well...

As far as an "all around high gain distortion" tone goes, the onboard High Gain channel of my Blackstar is preferred...

but there is a certain "ugliness" that I think is worth the 110USD I paid for the pedal :)

atleast I don't get to smoke (or drink up) the money :p

.... I think it's gonna rock with the neck, and in between pickup sounds.

Ordering a new neck P90 from GFS; as soon as they answer my email. If it's gonna fit, or not.

Damn, it's an ugly fuzz...

I can see it useful for two things:

1. Making a "wall of guitar" for a rhythm guitar track
2. getting out frustration, just by making a load of noise.

But for the price, it'll gonna make a nice "piece of display" atleast ;). Don't regret it.

Fuzz isn’t the same as distortion. It’s changing the waveform in a different way. This is why they sound splatty or gated. Turning down the fuzz control will smooth it out with some fuzzes.

And it’s generally not for playing chords. They work best with single notes for leads. Playing two notes at once creates a lot of non musical harmonics.

I find that this fuzz is excellent, for making a "wall of sound" while playing chords.

EDIT: also, power chords riffs, sound really agressive and "evil" :).

Playing single notes, it sounds a bit "thin and simple".

but well, It's a cool toy, and I would easily spend the money on tobacco and booze anyway :)

those "thin" single notes cut through a band very well usually

well, next thing to put on my "list" must be a band, then xD

:)

I'm just rather happy I bought the fuzz, instead of beer and smokes. This box will last me a lifetime, of nasty, "electric" and "blown up" fuzz tones :). A tad nastier than the onboard OD.

Re: Just got my EHX "Octavix" fuzz! :)

The tone is so nasty-

It could "kill" :p .

Might not use it alot, maybe just for a few riffs/ideas. But It's a really nice "mantel piece" (or how it's called) :).

Re: Just got my EHX "Octavix" fuzz! :)

Since you don't have a neck pickup, try turning your bridge pickup tone all the way down to bring out the octave. I do that even on a neck pickup with an Octavia tpe pedal. Also backing the volume off just a tiny bit can help.

I wanna hear what this crazy thing sounds like!

I'm sorry, I can't record a sound sample. Got no smart-phone, no webcam, (yet)

but there's a couple of sound clips on Youtube. I think it sounds even "rawer" and nastier in real life ;).
(the youtube clips made me buy it... especially the last part of one, where it sounds like the pedal/amp is completely broken) :)
